I've got the Low angle Range blues....

Well this must be my lucky week. It seems just when I get my setiQ operating as it should the dasm thing downloads a bunch of LAR WU. The current one is .001. This is the lowest one I ever noticed. I first noticed it when it seemed like two of my fastest machines were running pokey. This is the fourth one in a row!

Oh well, someone has to do it. 🙁

😎

LOL Train!

artemedes - I noticed that suddenly a whole pile are being sent out... :| I removed at least 6 in a row last weekend... :| :| :|

I and a bunch over at Ars have had it. We are OFFICIALLY boycotting VLARs with the win CLI. (seriously)

I am REMOVING them to be run with a different client (if I feel like it). We have documented for MONTHS the problem with VLARs and have been ignored. So guess what? :|

Anyway - question... Have you put any Service Packs and/or updates on you windoze? I'm trying to confirm a problem that many of us are having with VLARs which is slightly different than the documented problem...

Hi Poof,

I don't remember doing any service packs or updates (win98se). I don't generally use IE or Office so tend to avoid all the updates for em. Actually the computer is chewing through this one faster than I had hoped. I spent a good part of the day playing the downloaded demo of MW4. So I need to let it run for awhile to see if how much the game impacted my seti performance.

One of my comps is k63-450 and it just finished a 37 hour WU. It was .004. This computer normally finishes in 19 hours. I definitely know this one doesn't have any updates whatsoever, it only has win98se and seti on it😀. Hope that helps.

By the way would any of the updates help my times on these low angle bastards? I know it is a bug in 3.03 win client, but it doesnt' seem right to throw those out.

Better get off the net so it can finish this damn thing.

Hope that helps.

Most definitely does. I think I'm confirming more and more that without some SP or update, the VLAR problem gets exasperated.... 🙁

I don't have any updates on my windoze boxes (I'm a Linux person and have been burnt enough with windoze SPs... heh), and I've found that when running the 3.03 win CLI with a VLAR, the reported "cpu time" of the WU does not equal the actual "clock time" that it takes for the WU to complete.

So if I have a WU that gets reported as 7.5 hours in Setiqueue, I've found that it took the WU almost 9 hours to actually complete and upload! :|

Everyone who I've asked who claims they don't have that kind of problem have said that they have patched their windoze...

Sigh...

<<hehe>> 🙂 What if one of those LAR WUs is the one that finds the "Little Green Man"? :Q

/OK, me sticks to RC5 threads

LOL Kilowatt...

Seems the SETI folks don't care about buggy clients so what does it matter?

😉

ET is probably rolling on the floor laughing at us as it is... 😉

I just took a look at my SETI Watch, whoa!, guess I must have a plug of VLAR wu's working through, my fastest machine (P3 700@933) is show a 10 hour completion time, and it just goes down hill from there 🙁

Hmmm...

You know I'm gathering a herd of people on the 'net who will be ready and willing to smack you Hellburner...
/me wants Hellburner to check his clock now... 😉

And yes... there's a sh1tload of VLARs coming through. I started getting them in my queue last weekend... 🙁

I am BOYCOTTING them and putting them aside. :|

I know Poof already saw it but:

"The fact that VLAR work units produce long processing times on some client/system combinmations is not in dispute. I know exactly what in the client is causing it, I've even written an example fix for it. The problem exists in all clients, the effect is just more pronounced in some than others."

So, maybe a fix in the next client?

"ZapZilla, you've watched "Men in Black" too many times." Kilowatt

Watching "Men in Black" too many times is totally impossible! 😉

If it wasn't 12:30 in the afternoon I'd break out my MIB DVD right now. When's MIB II coming out?

Rob

So, maybe a fix in the next client?

Heh. Why should they fix it? It fulfills their goal of saving bandwidth.... It'll be interesting if they even listen to Lawrence...

Hell.. they ignored Roelof when he gave them the data and charts... 🙁

(/me is sorry that Hellburner is feeling the frustration and wraith of Poof... 😉)

You call that wraith?, you need to spend more time in the soapbox

I know y'all hang out in offtopic and the soapbox... 😉

I found out a long time ago that I get too worked up to engage in stuff like that anymore.

Must've been all those p1rst fosts on /.

😉
