don't do much other than websurfing and remote access into my work computer. i also play wc3, but that's about it. i game mostly on my console, if at all....

specs:
hp dv2000t notebook
2.0 core2 duo
SATA 7200rpm
geforce go 7200
2gb ram

i can hold off, but i've been using the new office 2007 suite at work, and i completely love it...just alot of little features that make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. i wonder if vista has similar new "cool" features that are worth the short term aggravation....

I would image your drive first then go for it, its pretty nice (though I am still dual booting xp while I finish setting it up) and I haven't run into many problem (and i am running vista 64), but I haven't tried wc3 on it so I cant tell you if that works.

I'm not even remotely close to putting in Vista. Too many problems and it ain't going in without a service pack. I would wait.

I'd say go for it, you'll love it. I run it on a less powerful laptop (GMA 950 Intel) and it flies with areo, etc. You have 2GB memory and a fast HD in there -- it will be awesome.

BUT.... The Go 7200 might not have drivers that are up to par for playing WC3. I'd do more research on this before you make the switch.

No problems to report with my Vista x64 HP ,don't pay too much attention to other people, you can only really gauge Vista stability/performance if you actually install it yourself and use it to get real feedback and experience.

I don't think SP1 will make a lot of difference, unlike XP which needed SP1 and even SP2,Vista has had a lot of improvements and a few Windows updates that have fixed most of the problems. I expect drivers to be the main improvement you'll see over time.

I'll go as far and say Vista is the best OS Microsoft have ever released, even stability after 7 weeks or so is far better then XP ever was. They just need to improve driver performance for gaming and they have a very fine OS.

personally, i'd say vista is more stable than XP. have had random probs with my PC for a while. reinstalled XP (fully - format etc) but no joy (see my other thread on sporadic BSODs and lockups).

eventually got fed up and installed the old Vista RC2 build 5744 and besides a few small annoyances it hasnt crashed once and i batter it quite a bit.

annoyances = Aero flicking off in the presence of some programs - UAC being a BITCA (should be more like kerios pers firewall system IMO - warns you but not annoying enough to turn off). Also, i dont like the search feature that much. no crashes though at all. Also just used readyboost or whatever the USB flash thing is called. noticed a lot of activity on the drive and i think my firefox sessions are on there for the most part. that feels *so* much smoother now!

have bought vista now (from the US of course - no way am i paying UK prices for vista - twice as much (literally) as americans pay!)

pulled the trigger and i've got no complaints so far....only have 2 hiccups: zone alarm suite had issues (switched over to kaspersky's) and the mute button built into my notebook doesn't mute audio (interestingly all other buttons - play, pause, forward, volume, etc - work fine)...

why even bother with 3rd party firewall software? Vista's built in firewall is just as good as zone alarm.

well, not according to the security guide...apparently the built in firewall is "good enough." besides though, since i have to buy AV software anway, i usually put down a few extra bucks for the entire security suite.

I would love to see the more scientific responses on how Vista performance relative against WinXP apple to apple comparison beside the typical one of how shiny Vista is. Is there any concrete write up of XP against Vista somewhere that I can look at?
