Ok so we took our math test the other day, and we get the results back today. I nearly got an A, I got a b+, but thats not the point. On the back side of the test there was a question that had to do with calculating standard deviation and easy crap like that. Well the data that we were using was in this table format, and the table was printed with bad quality. Ya know like how paper can sometimes have little dots ALL over it? Well I was calculating the standard deviation and used a total # of whatever of 291 instead of 285, and a total number of people of 61 instead of 60.

I did this because I was reading the table and a 5 looked like a 6 to me. Upon closer examination I now realize it was a 5, but it REALLY looked like a 6 at the time. And even looking at it in retrospect you can definetly see how someone could mistake it for a 6. So I asked my teacher about it (already knowing the answer) and he said I couldn't get my 1/4th a point on it back. 1/4th a point is alot on a 6 point test, would have made about a 3% difference in my overall grade at the end of the marking period. I asked him why and he said "NO" I said "But why" he said "My answers no" I said "I didnt ask what your answer, but why you answered that way?" He responded with another "No" So at that time I gave up and mumbled something about a communist under my breathe. Now for my question, is this right of him to do this to me? I had calculated the right answer with the data that I thought I had. I showed my work so you could clearly see I thought it was a 6. But this arsehat is gonna dock my overall grade of 3% just because he can't make a test that is CLEAR.

he gave you partial credit for your answer, right? So stop your bitching and be more careful next time. It's not his fault you can't read.

You should not have been so hurried at the end. If you had looked closely the first time, you would not have made an error. Sounds like the teacher is an asshole, but you can't read. BTW, when he says No he means No. There is no discussion after that to be held and when you called him a communist you made it worse for yourself. Hopefully he will start docking points from you because you call him a communist.

Did he give you marks for your working and just dock the mark for the overall answer, or did you get no marks for the question?
I believe most people give marks for working, and even if you use incorrect data, as long as your answer is right for the data you do use, you get some marks for that, but you do miss out on however many marks are available for the final answer (in a multi mark quiestion)

No, he docked as much as you possibly could. It was a big problem worth 1 point total. That part was probably only worth 1/4 of a point. So he took as much off as he could.

I already explained it was HARD to see. It wasn't like it was hard to read all the numbers, just that one. I didnt even realize it could be a 5. There were little ...... all over the place, and the 5 had one right where it would connect it to make it look like a 6. Not a matter of being able to read or not.

i would have taken the test from you looked at your answer.....then looked at you ...said ' im sorry i did make a mistake' and then i would have proceeded to take away the initial partial credit i gave you..:p

What, should he have taken off 1/8 point? 1/16 point? A slap on the wrist?
You got that part of the problem WRONG, so he knocked off points. Be glad he didn't mark the ENTIRE problem wrong.

If you had the brains to raise your hand and ask him if it was a "5" or "6" during the test you wouldn't have this problem.

You should've asked during the test if you weren't sure. But the teacher is also being somewhat of an @ss for not giving you an explanation, at the least.

1. I called him a communist basically to myself. He didn't hear it.
2. He argues with students just as much as you argue with him. So its not like it was a BIG deal. It happens.
3. He insults students intelligence all the time.
4. Im glad your not a teacher, cause your just like all the other arsehat teachers in my school that will give you a lower grade just cause they dont like you. Way to be vengeful. Im glad teachers today can be above the childish vengence crap and act like the adults they are supposed to be. \Sarcasm

All Im saying is that I think teachers need to be more fair. If they see it was an honest mistake and that they could see how it would happen then they should give the student the benefit of the doubt. Especially if they have demonstrated they know how to do the work. Now Im not saying its THAT big of a deal because I dont really care THAT much about my grade. I did on the test cause I wanted an A just for bragging rights. Its more just the point of it. Even though it does make about a 3% difference in my overall grade Ive figured out. Pretty significant amount for something as stupid as this.

If it was difficult to read, you should have asked during the test. That said, it would seem the decent thing to do for him to give you some partial credit, so yeah he sounds like kind of a jerk.

I hate people who think "no means no and you have no right to inquire details or reasoning at any time". That's ridiculous. However, calling him a communist was pretty stupid, a very shallow childish thing to say in my opinion. If I were you I would have left it alone when he repeated "No" but then stayed after class to talk to him about it. He might have said no at the time because he has a class to teach and didn't want to take the time to sit and argue with you about it right that moment.

I already said that I didn't realize at the time that it could possibly be a 5. Its not MY FAULT HE MAKES AN UNCLEAR TEST. Geez, for crying out loud use some decent paper and make the problems clear. Its not my job to decipher your freagin test, its my job to show you I know how to do your stupid problems.

And on top of all that, HE DIDNT GIVE ME PARTIAL CREDIT, HE MARKED ME OFF AS MUCH AS HE POSSIBLY COULD FOR THAT PART!!!!

You mean to tell me that you think that standard deviations are easy, but,

you also think that somehow a 1/4 of a point on a 6 point test is going to affect your grade by 3% for the marking period??!

Sorry, but 1/4 of a point on a 6 point test amounts to a 4.1667 percent difference on that test.

If you had ONLY 2 tests, of equal weight, it would be a 2.083 percent difference. But, I tend to think that most teachers don't have grades based soley on 2 tests (especially not two 6 point tests) Thus, in all likelihood, that 1/4 of a point doesn't make a bit of difference on your average for the marking period. In fact, if you were my student, I'd take 5% off your grade for the marking period just for whining!

When in doubt, ask ("is this a 5 or a 6"). Since you didn't ask, and could see later on that it was a 5, it was carelessness. Make a bunch of careless mistakes at a job and see how long you keep the job.

BTW, if I were your English teacher, I'd take off points for "your" instead of "you're"

I thought about staying after but decided against it. If you knew this guy you would understand.

An example. Earlier this year I ended up getting viciously sick throwing up for 2 days. I returned to school only to find out we had a quiz that day. I asked if I could have a day to read-up on everything and take the quiz tomorrow morning before school. He said no. So I said fine whatever, and I took the quiz. Turns out on the quiz I got all 3 problems right. But only got a 1/4 of a point out of 3. I asked him why and he said because I didn't show the "proper" work. I couldn't show the proper work because I wasn't in school to learn it. I was throwing up. And I didnt even know we had a quiz that day so its not like I could have prepared before hand to take that quiz. I didn't know I was going to get sick. And on top of all that he wouldn't let me have a day to read up on the material.

Thats the kind of guy Im dealing with.

So, what's your grade based on for the marking period? (besides the one test)?

Homework?
Quizzes?
other tests?

You mentioned quizzes, and that one was worth 3 points...
How many points are there total in a marking period?

1. Well of course that makes it ok! It shows anyway.
2. So?
3. Yet you don't want to listen to his authority...
4. You argued with him after he said no several times.
5. The cop thread wasn't yours and this isn't a private thread. Why are you singling me out? Because I made you look bad? If you had a decent argument instead of pouting like a little kid, you might be able to actually dig your way out of this.

And you knew before approaching your teacher about this that he is an ass.

You probably screwed up in the way you asked. Given the tone of your post here, I'm guessing you might have approached your teacher with an I'm-right-and-you're-wrong attitude.

Know what? Even if he's wrong, he's got the power. So in cases like this, right and wrong don't matter.

Next time, try an approach of I'm-confused-and-would-like-your-assistance-understanding-this-please-sir.

And as a bonus, if you learn this lesson, and learn it well, it will probably be the most valuable thing you learn in high school. It took me about 30 years to learn that lesson. Trust me: life is a whole lot easier now.

I singled you out because you always act like this.

I didn't argue with him, I simply asked why. I deserve an explanation.

I listen to authority, but I will also challenge it if I feel they are wrong. Im not a sheep.

Oh, and I did approach him in a very nice way. Nicer then I usually do. I was totally nice, until he started saying no in an arrogant fashion. Believe me, it was arrogant. He thinks he's better then all his students.
