I have an '89 Eagle Summit with about 87,000 miles on it. It was a one-owner car until I got it in '06. I've had quite a few problems with it since I've had it, but only paid $500 for it. I've had it at my mechanic's for a while now and they don't know what's wrong and they've put it on more than one scope. The engine light goes off and on. The blinker sometimes doesn't work when it's on for a right-hand turn, but the biggest problem is that I'm okay up to about 25 mph. After that, as you increase in speed, it starts to sputter and if you continue it will stall out. At first I was afraid it was the alternator because of how I would press on the accelerator and it would go slower, but they said it wasn't that. They thought it needed a new computer and that's what they put it it along with a new distributor. Someone said that there's something called a range chip in automatics and that might be it. Do any of you have any ideas what it might be? They suggested at my mechanic's that it might be electrical. I'm completely lost. I haven't had a car for like 8 months and I'm just about ready to junk it. After I got home today my landlord said that my old neighbor is a friend of his and a mechanic and that he'd ask him to look at it, but....who knows. UGH

Help?!

i'm not sure what the exact problem is with the car, but it sounds like an expensive fix. i dont think you should be throwing anymore money into an old car like this. its just not worth it. you'll be throwing more money into it in a year than what it is worth. consider fixing it only if its less than $100-150, else just sell it and get a new car of your choice.

It's time to let go of the car when the repair cost more than the car.

Also don't you mods get pay? :/ Apparently not enough?

That's my thought. If my landlord's friend or someone that knows something about the electrical part of it can fix it reasonable price, I'll do that. If not, I'll either junk it or just sell it "as is". I can't afford to buy anything right now, so I'd use that to save to buy another used one if I could.

lol Really? No. No we don't. Well, unless you count all the sexual favors we get. :Q

Fuel filter clogged, throttle psition sensor bad, if it has one, water in the fuel, EGR valve problem, clogged catalytic converter...

Lot of simple things it might be.

Hopefully these were ruled out before really expensive things were replaced.

The Summit was simply a Mitsubishi Mirage with a different badge slapped on it (IIRC)
The blinker issue is likely a wire grounding out somewhere it shouldn't it.
I highly doubt the transmission is electronically shifted, at most it might have a lock up torque converter.
As for the stalling issue I have a few thoughts, these are just thoughts on where to look I have no experience with that model car.
Check for cracked/broken vacuum lines going to the throttle body you may be getting to much air.
Have the MAF/MAP checked and cleaned, it may be giving incorrect readings causing the computer to not give enough fuel.
I can't tell for certain but it looks like the engine has a single fuel injector, the throttle body may be crusted up with carbon or the fuel injector partially clogged. Check the fuel filter as well, if it is plugged it may not be letting enough fuel to the injector.
The last possibility is that the catalytic converter may be plugged up, this is less likely than the other things though.

look for another $800-$1000 beater.... that should last you a good amount of time, look for an older Volvo 240, or perhaps a geo metro... you dont seem to worry about what others think of your car, so an older volvo, or perhaps even a cheap domestic truck would work for you, a Ranger would work amazing...
