There is a new store opening right by my house in Winnipeg, MB, Canada, and I decided just for the hell of it to apply. I applied to be a full-time computer technician.

I'm just wondering what you guys think the interview will be like? I don't have any certificates or anything. All my knowledge is just based on the systems I have built for myself and friends/family. (well I worked as a technician last year, but it was only for a month and they just let me go for no apparent reason - so I dont know if I want to tell them about that job.)

What do you guys think?

Looks like your chances are slim of getting hired but there is always a very slim slight chance.

Computer technician? Hmm, I do computer sales over in Ontario for Best Buy. My store manager will be coming over to Winnipeg ASAP to set things up there, so you'll probably get interviewed by him at some point. Great guy. :)

Do your research on the company, but the core idea behind your interview is that you will be working hand in hand with the salespeople on the floor, so your sales skills should be polished. Oftentimes salespeople in the computers dept. will hand over a nearly-complete sale to a technician so they can add feedback on what the customer is looking to purchase and help them get the complete solution - core product (computer), related (monitor, printer, digicam) and accessories (cables, surge protector, installation services).

You will also be responsible for stemming the tide of returns and exchanges by testing returned merchandise to see if they are truly faulty, etc. Lastly, don't worry about certs - they're not extremely necessary. Good luck. :)

What kind of qualification do you need to work at Best Buy? Any credentials?

A+ would be great but it's not necessary.

I used to work as a tech at Best Buy, so I can fill you in.

1. You don't need certs. In fact, if you work full time, Best Buy will partially cover you earning some certs.
2. The interviewer is going off a handbook printed around 1997. Unless he improvises, a lot of the questions will involve ISA, PCI, IRQ's, and Windows 95. Brush up on your old-school tech, but be prepared for him to perhaps ask some more modern questions.
3. Pay, at least in the US, starts around $9.50 to $10.00 an hour. I had previous work experience with Best Buy before becoming a tech there, so I started out at $11.00.
4. Don't tell them about the other tech job, unless you're 100% positive they'll speak good of you if contacted.
5. Play up the fact that you've not only built those computers, but performed troubleshooting and tech support on them. You'll never build a computer at Best Buy, but you're gonna spend a lot of time trying to figure out why the hell people's computers are so utterly fubar.

6. Good luck man. Techwork at Best Buy is somewhat unrewarding, and often boring, but I'd say its the best job you can have in that store. Highest pay (short of supervisors and management), least stress, least job obligations, and overall easiest job.

I'm not really nervous... I know my stuff. Hopefully I'll be making a "I just got hired at Best Buy' thread :)

i work at best buy... computer sales... be prepared for lots of hypothetical situational questions that are really lame... probably some role playing... act really "pro teamwork'' and so forth... just spew out the typical best buy propaganda and you'll be okay...

Well the first interview went great... I've got a 2nd interview tomorrow morning at 9:30. The guy made it seem like I basically had the job.

If you made it to the second interview, you pretty much did.

You're probably gonna meet with one of the managers, likely the general manager or sales manager, and discuss pay and such.

Congrats, you're practically in.

I get to meet George, he's some manager at the store I applied for. I didn't know how much $$ the position paid, so on the application form I just said I wanted $8+ (min. wage is 6.50). The guy interviewing me said they pay based on what they think you're worth, then he crossed out what I wrote and put in $10+. I was pretty happy with that.

Um......$10 CANADIAN?

Isn't that like $7.50 in real money? Crap man. When I quit that job, I was making $13.20 USD. And I was part-time.

Dont forget that cost of living is higher in the US, so wages are going to be higher there.

What's the difference in the cost of living? Are you talking housing is cheaper, or are utilities and everything else cheaper too?

Try to make your schedule end an hour or two before the store closes so you don't get stuck working the truck...heavy back-breaking work and you don't leave until midnight or so.

<-- quit after two weeks of working truck almost every night.
