I've got $100 - can you recommend a mboard/cpu combo?

I've got $100, and recently had my mboard die on me. I need new mboard and CPU. Was running a Duron 1.3 until all of this happened.

Can anyone recommend a new board and processor that are available for under $100?

Thanks!

Are you going to be recycling old DDR RAM or can you afford DDR2?

For a generic recommendation, a cheap Sempron will be fine and will run circled around your Duron. The motherboard depends on what you'll be recycling from your old system (RAM, video card, etc.)

You can also grab a Pentium D 805 and mobo @ fry's for $89 if there's one near you. There's also an X2 4200 Energy Efficient with a mobo for $120.

Both these boards have integrated graphics so you should be ok there if you're not a gamer.

The only downside is that you will need to buy some DDR2 ram, which is cheaper than DDR ram currently. These boards & cpus also give you decent upgrade path for the next couple of years.

You can always grab a C2Duo or higher clocked AM2 cpu, as well as be able to support DX10 graphics cards in the future.

Want a cheap computer? I bought a brand-new Pentium D 805 (Dual-Core) on EBay for $38. I've installed it on my $45 motherboard, AsRock 775Gi65, which I had originally bought for my E6300. On-board sound, lan & video. 1Gig dual-channel Crucial Ballistix DDR memory 2-2-2-5 ($60 on Ebay). I installed a brand-new Maxtor 250Gig HD ($49). I cloned the data including Operating System from the HD in my P5B system. It booted right up first time! I've overclocked the cpu to 3.3GHz and it runs surprisingly cool with stock heatsink. You could also upgrade the AGP video card. I got a X800xl on Ebay for $60, for my other system.
