After the miserable attempt to install the redhat 7.1
I gave up any hope to install linux. But today, I got a slackware (7.0) and it installed flawlessly! I know it's an old version, but so what, win98 I've using is 3 year old too.
I couldn't believe how smooth and fast everything is under KDE.
I haven't configured anything except videocard yet. But I'm happy and gonna get some rest now.
 
I downloaded and burned Redhat 7.0 (2 disc) and was wondering how do you install it. Is there a Boot disk I need or do I just use a win98 boot disk???
Never used Linux so this should be an adventure. If theres a How-To Site please direct me! 😉

If your mobo can support booting of CDROM, just pop in the RH CD and let it boot from it. The CD will load up a text menu at first. Just press enter at the screen and it will continue loading a GUI setup version. Follow screen instructions from there on or read one of the doc links RaDragon gave 😉
 
theplanb: That version of slack still uses KDE 1.x. If you think it's good, you should LOVE KDE 2.x which is out now. It's in the slackware development tree so it'll be there in the next release, but if you want it now I'm pretty sure www.linuxmafia.org has slackware packages for it.
 
yeah slackware 7.1 is getting a little old. i love slackware but cmon, the packages are OLD. nothing a little time wont fix but i dont want to do that everytime.

congrads theplanb, thats one of the biggest obstacles to overcome in linux. next its figuring out how to install things. then its mastering the system. then its convincing all your friends to use linux.

That is one of the things that is great about slack. They like to make sure things work and are stable. No bleeding edge this will crash two weeks after you install it type software in slack. Slack is the only linux distribution I really liked. Small, simple,and to the point.

I would hate giving support to all my friends when they install linux. Keeping thier windows machines running is tough enough.
 
If it gives you any trouble run Panda Antivirus Platinum.
It will automatically uninstall it for you !😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

You can install the slackware-current tree if you want new stuff. It's not an official release but it has the newest KDE, newest XFree86, newest GNome, etc. It's kinda like a CVS tree for Slackware. It's just as up to date as any of the other distros w/ the exeption that it still comes w/ the 2.2 kerenel. Updating to 2.4 is as simple as downloading the source then compiling it though.
 
Another newbie here. I installed Mandrake 8 on Friday and this is my first non-Windows Internet session. My Multitech external dialup modem worked fine with no hassles. But to make the connection to the Internet I had to go into the Mandrake Control Center and log in as root. Seems odd. I'll learn some command-line power after I play with the GUI awhile.
