I've decided that from now on, I'm taking twice the recommended amount of OTC medication.

The directions always say "For adults and children 12 and over - take two tablets every X hours"

That means it's safe for an 80lb twelve year old girl to take two of the damn things. I weigh 2.5 times as much as that girl, so I should be taking 2.5 times the medication, right? I think twice as much should be plenty safe, shouldn't it? The normal dose that the directions say to take never does crap.

Weighing 275, I'd like to know this too.

It's safe. Unless you take about 10x the recommended dosage (on most medications) you'll be fine. Though, it varies medication to medication so you should probably understand the pharmacokinetics before trying it.

What medication are you taking and why?

There is a reason that they say there are limits. First you are just making your body used to the excessive medication so when you really need it, it's not going to be nearly as effective. Second, people who use more drugs than necessary aid in making the bacteria/virus more resistant.

Don't be an idiot and just take the recomended dosage and only take it if it's absolutely necessary.

He's talking about standard NSAIDs, pseudoephedrine, and other OTCs, not prescription drugs.

I'm taking Sudafed, because I'm sick and my nose is stuffed up and therefore I can barely breathe. This isn't vicodin or something.

This is only for antibiotics, and it's not people who take too much it's people who misuse them, well, it's really everybody who uses them, but people who misuse them just move the bacteria evolutionary cycle along faster.

Well, you also have to consider the number of pills in a given time period, for example it may not be a problem to take 4 Tylenol instead of 2 (I don't know) but surely if you take them 4x a day for a few days, taking the double dosage is more likely to cause a problem than not.

All in moderation I guess. But yeah, I wonder about the babies / kids / and then one size fits all for adults. I think they used to recommend just 1 pill and sorta hinted around on the packaging that you could take two, at some point in time they just made it standard to take 2 pills for most meds, probably because it's more profitable, but, who knows.
