I've decided on Vista 64-bit...

Let me start with saying that yes, I searched and I found some basic info posted, but I have some variants of the things posted.

First off, I understand that the difference between the two versions is the Windows back-up & restore feature.

Now, I'm a professional poker player (well, will be, hence the rig, as of Feb. 1, 2008) and I need this for my business.

The big ??? I have is specifically about the built-in backup program that comes w/ Vista. Is this similar to other "ghosting" programs out there?

I want to be able to completely back up my HDD and is this the right tool to do that? If not, it would seem as though the Home Premium would be the way to go and go with another program to do that?

That said, also, if I do/should look at another program to completely back up my HDD, what would you fellas recommend?

Thanks as always!

I would get Home Premium and use something like Acronis True Image backup software for doing a complete HDD backup.

BTW give my regards to Phil Helmuth. 🙂

I am by no means arguing or whatnot, but can anyone give me a good reason to go with something like Acronis True Image/Norton Ghost as opposed to the built-in backup that comes w/ Vista Ultimate?

And while we're on the subject, seeing as this is a new build, which is the best route to go, OEM or Retail?

Lastly, where is everyone buying their Vista 64 at? Links/PM's would be greatly appreciated!

I still think OEM is the best deal. You can reinstall; it's just tied to one motherboard. However, I don't see that as a big restriction considering that you should be building something you're going to use for a few years. Obviously it wouldn't work for those who swap out their motherboards all the time, but if you're making it to last it should be fine. If your board dies you can call and get a new code.

You may also want to consider Vista Business which would be cheaper than Ultimate, and also has the complete backup. The main differences between it and HP are that it lacks some of the entertainment features like Windows Media Center and Extender, DVD Maker, and Movie Maker. (The built-in games are not installed by default but can be added in the "turn on Windows features" applet.) If you don't use those, Business would have all you need. It's just as capable for gaming.

Newegg is a popular place to buy it from, but I found a slightly better deal at ZipZoomFly. Use Pricegrabber to find the lowest price, but be careful to limit it to reputable dealers. I unknowingly bought a pirated copy of XP a couple of years ago.
