By car. By insanity. Without "plans". A lot of attempted bookings same day or within the next day. When those fail or something happens, I sleep in my car. It's terrible and I hate traveling alone. If you've been in the garage, you know my car was having some issues. (Seems to be resolved to some extent except for a CEL and possibly faulty cat; the car moves; all I need)

I think I am never going to stay in a hostel again. I've been in... a few and I've hated all of them. I'll just deal with having to pay $50-60 for a private room in a nice place on AirBNB rather than $25-40 at a 6-12 bed per room hostel. (Where the AC doesn't work for that room, everyone is a noisy inconsiderate asshole, and all the problems for people who are light sleepers occur)

Right now, I'm at a Starbucks in a suburb of DC. (Takoma Park? Nope, College Park apparently... whatever.) I don't like DC so far. Ultra ghetto in too many parts. Finally found one with Google Wifi. So good. (Don't even attempt to use the internet at a Starbucks with AT&T provided wifi. Futile.)

I'm trying to find a place to live and I've been having a really difficult time. I've really disliked a lot of cities that I've visited or have felt overly indifferent about them. I started in Seattle then Portland, SF, LA, SD, LV, Denver, Chicago, and now DC. I was going to visit more cities between and so forth but I'm starting to get annoyed I've been annoyed as all fucking hell mother fucker. I'm on the road for another month and then I'm hoping to settle down/give-up-because-every-place-sucks-but-I-guess-this-one-is-the-least-suckiest-so-I'll-live-in-this-place-I've-decided-upon. I'll leave DC in a few days and head over to Philadelphia then NYC (been there already) and then Boston. No real plans after Boston except that I better fucking love Philadelphia, NYC, or Boston... otherwise, I got 100 problems.

Maybe you're just not a city person? Try the suburbs, rural areas, and/or farming communities.

go to northwest dc and your tone about dc will change. you're in a shitty part of maryland right now (pg county) which is borderline a not-so-nice part of dc. dc is big, and like any city, it has shitty parts.

I don't think I get the point of this. You're making a road trip across the US, and when you find a city you like you're going to stop there, find a job and make it your home?

You're going to hate where ever you travel when you make no plans. You have probably spent no time to get to know the cities and meet anyone. You're wasting your time if you're driving to Philly, NYC and Boston. You're going to hate them all b/c the problem isn't any city, it's you.

This

If you hate every city you've gone to, then maybe you just hate cities? I know I do. Check out the suburbs... quieter, but dense enough population to usually have a lot of stuff around.

Yeah, you should try something more rural. Stop in Connecticut around Mystic on your way to Boston, maybe you'll like that better.

OP, instead of booking hotels, you shuold book ATOTers.
Pretty sure they'll want a bit of trident in their hizzouse, and they're all over the US.
Having someone local you kinda know really helps in getting to know a place.

This. It (the OP's quest) makes no sense.

Hit man?

Philadelphia? if youu want hookers and drugs drive by the stadium.

Keep askin' and you'll find out.

Sounds nice. I'll be sure to stop by.

I am a city person. I am not a person who is into ghetto shitholes though. (For instance, most of Chicago and San Diego) The gentrified areas are what I am interested in because they have nicer buildings and less people who are shooting up occupying said buildings. Or, if they do shoot up, at least they don't do it in the street as much. That's always nice. But the thing is with Chicago and San Diego in that regard, those "nice" places frequently are $3+/sqft and sometimes more depending on the place. (Studios and 1bedrooms being way more sometimes. $1.5k-2k/month for a 1 bedroom in a non-section-8-omg-kill-me-I'm-so-poor-and-attract-druggies neighborhood? OK. This isn't SF or NYC...)

HELLO? HELLO?

go to northwest dc and your tone about dc will change. you're in a shitty part of maryland right now (pg county) which is borderline a not-so-nice part of dc. dc is big, and like any city, it has shitty parts.

I've seen some of the "nicer" parts of DC. Sure, it's nice but those homes are also in the $1,000,000+ range quite easily. Apartments there aren't often found and ain't gonna be cheap or accommodating either.

I don't think I get the point of this. You're making a road trip across the US, and when you find a city you like you're going to stop there, find a job and make it your home?

What's so difficult about that? You have a better way? I'm going to be doing software development. I'm hardly struggling to find jobs in any city. (If I even need to be living in the city that I am being employed from...)

You're physically driving around the country looking for a place to live? I give you props, dude. Now, about this thing called the Internet...

Yes. I've looked up places on the Internet a lot but going there is one way to experience all the shit they don't tell you or showcase as much. (like how SD is super sprawled and ultra ghetto just outside of downtown... Hillcrest and La Jolla maybe being the only other exception? (If you can afford the multi-million dollah homez))

You're going to hate where ever you travel when you make no plans. You have probably spent no time to get to know the cities and meet anyone. You're wasting your time if you're driving to Philly, NYC and Boston. You're going to hate them all b/c the problem isn't any city, it's you.

Not true. I've spent plenty of time in the cities. Meeting people is another matter and really varies. Most people I meet I don't like in these cities but that's just how it is. Are you saying I'm wasting my time because Philly, NYC, and Boston are all shit holes? I'm not the problem when your city is an underdeveloped shithole.

Dont tell him that! thats where I live.

I'M COMING

This

If you hate every city you've gone to, then maybe you just hate cities? I know I do. Check out the suburbs... quieter, but dense enough population to usually have a lot of stuff around.

Nope. Cities are where I need and want to be. Most cities don't even have the population density that I desire. I like the population density of NYC but I hate how expensive it is to get anything that isn't a shithole. If I had more money then I would probably just move there...

Ashville NC, go there, supposed to be the hip place to live.

I know someone who moved there. Seems like it.

You hated SD? lol

It's not exactly a nice place... If you're into shitty SoCal everything then it's great... Muffler shop after muffler shop...

Yeah, you should try something more rural. Stop in Connecticut around Mystic on your way to Boston, maybe you'll like that better.

I don't think I'll be stopping along the way...

The fact you hated San Diego says a lot about you. Probably best city in US if you can afford it.

That really says nothing. The Coronado seemed nice but that city is so sprawled. For instance, it only has a large population because it has 4.5x the land mass inclusion as Seattle. Its population density is boringly low and sprawly as fuck.

Be sure to come down to New Orleans and Austin on your tour of the nation.

Been to Austin already. (Separate trip) It's OK but I think it might be too dry and hot for me. Also, with the sprawl and current shitty architecture... yikes. Maybe in 20 years it'll look better and be more condensed...

You can rent in some of the best Chicago neighborhoods for well under $2 per sq ft. If you're looking only at brand new luxury high rises right downtown you'll be in $3 per foot territory.

You could try Arligton VA..a lot of places in walking distance..metro access..single young professionals every where..not dirty or crime ridden..might be too expensive for few years but just find a room in 3 or 4 bedroom place

I think that really depends on your definition of the "best" neighborhoods.

Champagne taste with a beer budget

Also LOL at everything outside of downtown or la Jolla is a ghetto. Clearly you did one drive through the city and that was it.

I live DT right now but if I end up making SD a permanent spot I intend to move out to one of the other neighborhoods where it is actually quite nice. You're not going to be looking at luxury housing because spending 800K+ isn't really in my budget but very very nice things can be had for reasonable price if you know where to look.

TBH you aren't going to be happy anywhere. Calling it now.
