OK if memory serves, starting in 1987:

Timex Sinclair 1000 3.25 Mhz
Apple IIc
IBM XT 8Mhz?
286 25Mhz - It only cost an extra $400 to add Math Coprocessor and 4 MB of RAM
386DX 33Mhz
486DX4 - 100Mhz
AMD 586DX4 133Mhz
K6 200Mhz
K6-2 300Mhz
K6-2 350Mhz still in use as web/mail/file server
Celeron 300A@450Mhz still in use as workstation
K6-2 500Mhz still in use as mp3/file/LTSP server
K6-3 400Mhz downstairs workstation
2 - MediaGX 180Mhz one used as cable modem router and another is an LTSP workstation
Winchip2 200Mhz Iopener
K6-2+ 450Mhz LTSP workstation
BP6 Dual Celeron 366Mhz@500Mhz Main workstation

I don't plan on buying anything more until I truly have a need for it. I have been holding out since the BP6.

That's only 19 CPUs in 15 years, I guess I'm not truly an Anandtecher.

about 6 or 7 CPUs in 5 computers in the last 10 years. This is a virtual boom of computers compared to the 8088 to 80486 jump.

I swore pretty much the same thing after my first TBird experiences.

The Tiger MP was enough to make me try again, & I haven't regretted it for an instance. The problem is chipset support, not the CPUs themselves. Stick with good chipsets, & you'll be fine.

>>

i agree with that the chip probably has no problems, its all the crap motherboard s out there, and as far as chipsets go everybody and their mother has their opinion on good athlon chipsets, if you pick one and it doesnt work they will come back and sayy ohhh that was a bad chipset you should have gotten this, or make ridicoulous claims like i dont know, my "same chipset" has been running for the last 3 years with no reboots.

My dually P3 has the best motherboard ive seen, the serverworks chipset is awsome. My p4 has a refrence intel board in it, it works but is nothing special.
>>

If you're willing to give AMD another shot, the AMD chipsets are rock solid. Not the absolute fastest available, but rock solid - which to me is more important. My Tiger MP has been more stable than my BX system. That says a lot to me.

Let me see if I can come up with a complete list here... This is in chronological order from when I owned it, not order they came out in.

M68020/16MHz (Mac LC)
i486dx/33MHz
M68030/25MHz (Mac LCIII)
i486dx4/100MHz
P200MMX (430TX Abit PX5, man am I still fond of that one...)
PPro 180 (Still in use as a NAT+Firewall, IMAP mail server, and SAMBA file/print server under Linux Mandrake 8.1)
K6-2 400MHz (Installed in the Abit PX5 using the 2x=6x multiplier remap trick)
K6-2 400MHz (This time in an ASUS P5A)
Dual P3-500MHz Katmai cores (Tyan Tiger 100 mobo-440BX)
AMD Athlon 500MHz (MSI MS-6167-great mobo still using this combo to this day)
AMD Athlon 500MHz (MSI MS-6167-why argue with success... Using a GFD, this chip is STILL running 100% stable at 700MHz STILL USING THE 1/2 cache multiplier.)
2 computers using Intel Celeron 400MHz (Intel 440LX mobo)-later upgraded to 533MHz then sold
2xIntel P2 overdrive 333MHz @ 350MHz each (PPro SMP mobo, only supported EDO RAM, but was still a great combo)
2xSMP Celeron 533 (Abit BP6, man was I glad when I got rid of that POS... It was nothing but trouble)
AMD Athlon 600MHz (MSI MS-6167-can you detect a trend?)
Intel P3-600MHz @ 800MHz Coppermine core (VIA 133MHz chipset)
Intel P3-600MHz @ 800MHz Coppermine core (MSI BXMaster)
AMD Thunderbird Slot-A 700MHz @ 850MHz (ASUS K7M-got it on a trade here. Nice mobo and proc combo, still using in Linux to this day with a GF2MX)
IBM PowerPC G3 400MHz 1MB cache @ 476MHz (Apple PowerMac 9500-great PCI PowerMac)
AMD Thunderbird Socket-A 1400MHz @ 1500MHz (ASUS A7V133-my main combo)
M68040/33MHz (Apple Quadra 950)
PowerPC601/66MHz (Apple Quadra 950 with PowerPC Upgrade card)

I'm missing stuff that I can't remember time frames on here. For exampe, StrongARM 206MHz in an iPaq, whatever proc is in an Apple IIgs, my TiVo, etc. Also doesn't include machines that I am not proud of even though they serve a useful purpose like Apple PowerMac 5200/75MHz, the worst designed PowerMac ever.
