You can get 4 gallons of 190 denatured alcohol for around 75 bucks.

Pour a few ounces in say, half a dozen bowls (heat resistant) and it will raise the temp in a normal size room by several degrees in a few minutes.

No smoke, no soot, just nice clean warmth.

edit - since fire tends to do things you aren't expecting, make sure you have a decent size fire extinguisher handy. That much heat being generated all at one time could cause some problems. Water also works but is difficult to spread evenly.

My fireplace is a pellet stove, with a flick of a switch it takes manufactured biofuel and turns it into heat and a small amount of ash as long as I dump two bags a day into it. My idea of conquering this any further would be to make it self-cleaning, the fire is as conquered as it's going to get.

What could go wrong with an alcohol fire?

For those too young to remember, Indy cars ran off of alcohol for one or two years. There was a fire in the pits and the only way to tell someone was on fire was to see them waving their arms around.

I have looked at the pellet smokers. They automatically keep the fire and smoke at a constant. Talk about making fire our bitch!

My fireplace is propane. Two bucks a gallon. Contained, clean flame, no wood to haul in, no pellets to pour in, no ash to haul out. Keeps room nice and toasty.

When I worked with hydraulic presses the insurance company was concerned about them. They said that fires have been caused when a hydraulic line would develop a pinhole leak and then the oil would catch on fire.

Pinhole leaks are super dangerous. If it happens to hit your skin it injects right into you and you lose that part of your body as the oil is toxic and it starts to do necrosis internally. Pretty crazy stuff.
