I've been robbed

Every month or so we have a cleaning crew clean our hourse. We've been using the same service for quite some time, and we have never had any problems with them. Well, that all ended today when I realized that a rather expensive (and sentimental) crystal elephant was missing from the living room. I have no proof that that someone from the company took it. But I also can't think of any other possibility. What should I do? Just come out and accuse them of thievery?

set up surveillance and have them come back so you can get them stealin stuff on tape
(this time take real valuables and put them away - buy total crap fake jewelry or something and leave that stuff out)

Call the company, tell them the crew didn't do a very good job and ask them to be sent back. When they arrive tie them all up, demand the crystal elephant back, for every 30 minutes that goes by without the elephant being returned or it's location revealed you cut off one of the crew's fingers. Eventually you will find out if they have it or not.

Good luck.

what if they *really* don't have it?

I've seen this on Seinfeld before... you need to go to the cleaning person's house pretending to be a police detective and steal it back.

Simple. Then he just knifes them all and calls yet another cleaning company to come take care of the mess.

Jeez.....am I the only one in this thread who is thinking?

I don't trust these companies anymore (or at least I don't trust their employees).

Maybe they broke it and threw away the pieces
That's a possibility. But I just have a feeling that it was stolen.

Call the company up and explain yourself. Hostility won't get you anywhere, but I'm sure they will help you out and, if they don't, call the cops.

Call their police and file a report immediately. Make a list of everyone that was at the residence since you last saw it because everyone is a suspect.

When the police are there, ask their advice on confronting the cleaning company.

If they say to contact their manager/supervisor/whatever, then make sure you mention that you have filed a police report and tell them that if it isn't turned over within 48 hours that you will hold the company itself responsible, take them to court to recover the cost of the statue and file a report with the BBB.

That will get some asses reamed. They will likely assume fire everyone that was at your place that day and pay the cost to replace it (if replacable) than to have the company get a bad reputation through court and the BBB.

I always have a hard time trusting house cleaners although it isn't well founded since I haven't had any bad experiences. I make sure most of my valuables are out of sight prior to their arrival.

I don't think that crystal elephants rank high on the list of items most likely to get stolen. I'd go with someone broke it while cleaning. Talk to the cleaning company about it without accusing anybody of thievery.

Col. Mustard, in the library, with the candlestick.

...oh wait. This is robbery, not murdery. DAMN YOU CARMEN SANDIEGO!
