Attending work-sponsored functions is usually one of those "optional, but mandatory" things.

They can't make you go, they don't tell you to go, but they notice if you don't.
 
Well if Teddy Kennedy is there don't accept a ride home from him as that's a bridge you probably don't want to cross.
