I've been gaming on my laptop and my temp is 76C!

Thats pretty hot isn't it? After gaming my tempature is 76degrees Celius. It runs idle at 49C.

I guess they are made to take these temps or what?

Wow.. That is really hot...I guess it has a hard time getting rid of that amount of heat with those tiny fans

yea no crap. The machine came with a ATI 7500 so I guess they expect you to use it for some gaming? I stopped gaming an hour ago and I'm at 50C right now. I assume this is normal...its a new dell

thats like, too hot to touch sorta thing 😕

At the end of the day, if it breaks, just send it back 😉

Dan 🙂

If it's a p4, that's about the time the clock throttling starts and performance slowly dropps off. See another post of mine about this.

My Inspiron with a geforce 440 go 64 meg never gets over 60.... at that level, the fan is running at maximum rpm. When is you fan set to go on? Is it running at full speed when it's running at that temp?

yes its full speed, but it doesn't start running full speed till about 66C.

I have noticed some framerate drops in gaming. I guess its that throttling that was mentioned. Its a brand new Inspiron

:disgust: That's why I hate mobile Intel CPUs. Some people would never know it was clock throttling. Something horribly wrong. Call Dell and ask for service. It should never hit that temperature. Of course, if it weren't for the throttling it would go higher but they should tell you or it should beep or something. You should never use something running at a lower speed than what you've paid for. Anyway, get that thing serviced.

Throttling kicks in at 72 degrees. Since you're running 76 degrees I'd say that the chip is doing all it can to stay alive by clock throttling. I wonder if there's bad contact with the die or something. Get that thing serviced.

John the specs are...

Dell Latitude c640
P4 1.8ghz
512MB ram
20gig HD
ATI Radeon 7500 mobile video.

I'm idleing at 53C right now :-(

Yeah, I agree with you there. Since he's noticing some frame rate drops it seems pretty obvious. Still the temp can only go so high before any chip at .13u has problems with stability. I don't think that the mobile part's throtelling temp can be much if any higher than the desktop counterpart. It's pretty high up there as it is.

Call Dell and find out what's going on.... my fan kicks in >45c at low rpms and then cranks up to high rpms @ > 55c. If your cooling fan isn't kicking in with the higher rpms until 66c than something is wrong.

Hmmm...I would assume (guess) that the BIOS is what controls the fan speed based on the temp. Have you tried looking for a bios update?
It would be interesting to see what happens if you're idling at your "cool" 54c or whatever and you run a quick sandra CPU test. See if it's where it should be. If it is, run it several times in a row. See if it drops...Given the drop in framerates after extended use that you're seeing I think you'll see your sandra CPU scores drop aswell.

i just upgraded the bios this week to the latest version. I'm not familiar with the Sandra test. Can you point me to it and I'll give it a whirl
