I've always wondered...

Perhaps "ATI" it stands for "ATI Technologies, Inc", and is a paradoxical acronym similar to GNU. 🙂

I remember the thread from a while back too, there was various discussion about its history, but to my knowledge is stands for nothing.

Yep. This exact same topic was raised a few months ago . It was discovered that it actually stands for "@ss Ticklers Incorporated". Actually, lifeguard 1999 has the right answer:
