I've always said I was going to get fired via email

How's laid off different from fired? You won't even unemployment w/ laid off. Bastards.

Not true. I was laid off once and got unemployment. I went back to the same company after a few months.

This was in 2001/2002 - not long after 9/11 and the whole IT industry crash. That sucked.

Likewise.

Laid off is the only sure et to get unemployment. Sorry about your job, must suck to be them if laying of the little guys is going to improve their company.

Look at it as a way to get a better job. seriously, if you were only making $6.75 doing helpdesk stuff, they did you a favor. you can make more than that working at, well pretty much anywhere other than McDonalds.

Including McDonalds, actually.

you wouldn't happen to be proficient in .net, windwos server 2000, and oracle by chance? Just read, helpdesk ok.

mm they start contractors here at 15 hr for helpdesk, 17 starting when hired, and if you make tech 2, ~19/hr. Plus if you have the drive and enough talent, you can move on up to other departments pretty easily. 47k+ salaries there 🙂..

I am rambling.

I am in fact proficient with Server 2000, and my actual responsibilities included oracle administration. The title may say Helpdesk, but the crap I actually had to DO doesn't.

And by my asking around, we were previously a $120,000/qtr department... Even being ridiculously underpaid like that. Now we're UNDER $6000. The equipment (PCs, servers, infrastructure) budget has seen a cut from half a million to ABSOLUTELY ZERO. The remaining Helldesk personnell are actually being handed the keys to the ENTIRE DEPARTMENT. Even the administrators and technicians are getting bounced (it was curious that none of them were in their offices today. Apparently they walked out as soon as they heard the news.) They also halved the connectivity budget.

The total surviving staff is a pair of $12k/yr hourly part-time employees who have no degrees, no certifications, no experience, and, I'll personally attest to this - NO SKILLS. They're both Indian. I guess that's why they kept them... ?

Someone's pockets are being lined with the blood of IT.... And they probably think this place is going to continue to operate as normal. Yeah. Good luck with that - especially when you start underpaying the telco for those T1's/T3's.

Sorry to hear that OP. Pretty sucky way to let you know, as well. 🙁

Frankly, if it weren't for that email, and the subsequent bitching to the departmental mailing list, I'd still have no idea I was jobless - because when I go in for a shift, I'm almost always the only one around.
