Happy New Year!!

I need an assist on getting iTunes up and running. My kids installed it on
their computer quite a while back, I deleted it a couple of months ago
mistakenly thinking it was a source of illegal downloads. Turns out it was
Limewire that was the culprit, which I deleted as well.

So the kids got iPods for Christmas, and we tried loading iTunes back onto
the computer from the CD that came with. It seemed to load ok. However
when we click on the shortcut to open it, an error message comes up, the one
that says "this program has encountered an error, do you want to notify
Microsoft?" I've gone through all the steps, completely removed the old
installation (I think), did the "repair" option on the new install,
everything I can think of. We can't get the new iTunes install to open.

Anyone have any experience with this problem and can offer advice?

thanks,

Veech

First, and a bit off-topic, I'd suggest user-level accounts for the kids, to keep malware off the PC.

On Itunes, try uninstalling both it and quicktime using add/remove programs, then delete their directories in the program files and my documents directories - then download the latest build from http://www.apple.com and try reinstalling. Past that I can't help you, you couldn't pay me enough to install it on my PC and so I'm not very familiar with it.

Thanks, I've heard about also deleting QuickTime from a couple of other sources as well, so I hope that's the simple solution.

What would you recommend besides iTunes for use with the iPod?

There really isn't much else to use with iPods. The thing of it is that the iPod opens up in iTunes and you can sync it with your music library and the playlists you have set in iTunes. Every time you plug in the iPod it will update as necessary (if you choose that option). So it's super simple. As an alternative checkout Xplay that allows drag and drop to the iPod as a disk (costs $30 for full version). Anapod Explorer is also good, but not as simple as either of the before mentioned solutions.

Nah, there are a whole bunch of options. For starters, both Winamp and Foobar2k have plugins which allow you to manage Ipods, and Ephpod is a good, free standalone Ipod manager. However, the OP said that it's for his kids, and if they're like most kids they won't much care to hear his input on it :p So let us know how reinstalling QT goes, OP.
