1: WTF is going on when it scans my drive and says ?determining volume? or whatever. Is it trying nomrolize my MP3?s or what?.. I?m confused and slightly scared.

2. Is there a way I can delete the music library and force iTunes to rescan my music directory and build a new library?

1: turn off soundcheck in preferences
2: ctrl-a, rightclick > clear, select no to moving them to the recycle bin. Import new folder into itunes from file

Just drag new songs into the iTunes library window and iTunes will take care of adding and sorting the song. No need for it to rescan you music folder.

but what if i remove or change the location of a song/entire cd?

If you need to remove a song, or songs, just delete them from the iTunes Library window. Why would you need to change the location of a song after you've added it to the iTunes Library?

Well most of the time it's renaming a file to fix errors or changin an id3 tag more so them moving it, but the effect would be the same.

And I still haven't found out what iTunes is trying to do by "derterming the volume" of my songs... whats the deal with that?

So you don't get ones that is 10x louder than the one you just played. So they are all a consistent volume when you play one right after another

yeah, i get why it's doing it, i just don't know how. as long as it's not modifying my mp3's i don't really care.

Both renaming a file and changing an id3 tag (right click on song->show info) can be done from w/in iTunes. And I'm not sure why your iTunes keeps "determining the volume" even though you have soundcheck turned off. I have 3 computers running itunes (2 PC, 1 Mac) and none of them have that feature stuck in the "on" position.
