This is such a double-edged sword.

iTunes is an awesome program. If they port it to Windows properly, I think a lot of people would use it and love it (assuming they can get past the Apple name).

On the other hand, one of the best reasons to have a Mac is for iTunes.

Much better organization and ease of use.

Incorporates encoding, transcoding, and burning.

Fused with the iPod.

Now fused with Apple's online music store.

Does iTunes come pre-loaded for FREE on all new Macs?

I might buy an iBook in a few years once they beef up the specs big time.

Yes. Even if you don't have it, you can download it for your Mac.

coming ... prolly not soon.

I never got the 'greatness' of iTunes. I've used at computer expos, mac stores, friends houses and it's not something i'd use. Seems like a Mac cooler version of MMJB.

edit -- oh yeah, i hope it's just as awesome as QuickTime. ;)

You can also share your iTunes library over the net with any other computer with iTunes 4.

See here:

"iTunes 4 has a Music Sharing feature that uses Rendezvous to give you remote streaming access to your personal music library from any room in your house or over the internet from work to home."

The Music store feature is also very cool, if you're into buying single songs. However, I prefer still to buy whole albums from the local shops.

Yeah, I really don't get what iTunes can do that a combination of EAC, Nero, Winamp and proper directory naming/structure couldn't.

Sure you could say "but it's all in one," but then again when do you ever need all three at once? I would rather just have the light footprint of Winamp a majority of the time than a whole freaking iTunes program.

Then again I've never really used it, so perhaps I'm missing something major.

The beauty of iTunes is in it's tight integration with CD burning and the iPod. Plus the user interface is great.

I have ripped my entire CD collection into iTunes on my PowerBook and it is great. To truly appreciate it, you have to spend some time with it. I was skeptical (as many people here are) at first.

EAC and Nero are a pain. Nero is my fave burning program, but it is far from being user friendly. Winamp serves me well, but it ain't the most beautiful program in the world.

iTunes is beautiful and all-in-one, and more importantly, it's built specifically for music. There are Windows programs that do the same, but they aren't as slick as iTunes is.

It's sort of like the iPod. There are LOTS of units out there that do what the iPod does, but none of them does it as well as the iPod. (And iTunes is made for the iPod.)

If Microsoft can't even write a decent MP3 player for their own OS what makes Apple think they can?

Cause microsoft seems to have a problem with making competent programs, and Apple doesnt....

I mean for Windows. Quicktime is great on MacOS but on Windows it's clunky.
