I just built a new computer last week and yesterday i needed to recharge my ipod and add some songs. Same install of windows

To my surprise, itunes comes up and says im not autorized to have all of the songs I PAYED FOR and deletes all those songs from my IPOD automatically without asking(about 75 tracks). So while im freaking out and thinking how lame Apple is i decided to try playing a track.

It says this computer is not authorized to play this song but i can authorize a limit of 5 additional machines.

Thankfully, Apple will let me change my hardware 4 more times, they are very kind.

So now im buying the CD's

Goodbye ITUNES STORE

uhh... this is nothing new? maybe the songs being deleted off the ipod.. but I never had that problem (tho I had it manually managed). And how exactly is building a new system have anything to do w/ the same install of windows? If you swapped out the hardware, windows activation should have kicked in and done the same thing.

as an aside, anyone know how zune and play4sure work in comparison to fair play?

itunes has been like this for ages......but anyways, that 5 restriction comps thing is silly. i wish it was more like 10. although, if you reformat your computer, you can deauthorize all of the machines and then start from stratch again.

that makes sense, maybe their isnt a problem then if you can de-authorize once you hit the limit

I was just thinking, if i build a new computer every two years, by the year blah blah my itunes music will be botched

I thought it was obvious that buying itunes drm music was a bad proposition from the outset :p I bought an album from the itunes plus store, more as a show of support than anything else but I still find cds the better value proposition. Of course that's contingent on living near a sufficiently large music store.

Just stick to CDs. Only reason I buy from iTunes is for a few exclusive songs and cause I cheaped out and didn't want to buy full albums for a few songs... but after a while, you can clearly tell that the sound quality is absolute crap. And they want to charge me an extra $.40 for a s lightly better bit rate? Screw that, CDs from now on.

itunes plus is no longer a premium thanks mostly to amazon's mp3 store. and it was 30 cents :p

Given the Wired article on how Universal sees all this, it makes me want to just pirate my music and just give money directly to the artist in the form of a check.

It was $.30 more for iTunes plus, but now it is the same $.99

My thing is, I seldom like all the songs from a CD, so for me, iTunes is great since I can buy just the songs that I want.

I do agree though that CDs rock iTunes in terms of quality.

DRM is just pure evil. QTFairUse will strip the DRM off your legally purchased track and allow you to play your legally purchased music on the player of your choice, without restriction.

Amazon is nice, but they don't have the selection iTMS does.

And 256kbps AAC (iTunes Plus) is vastly superior to 256kbps MP3.

That said, a CD rip to FLAC or ALAC beats them both. ;)

you can also deauth a machine before you wipe/sell/reload it.

as far as the 5 machines thing, i'm sure that's something they had to work out with the music companies.

It's really easy to de-authorize all your machines- and why are you buying anything but the DRM-free stuff now, anyway?

Goodbye ITUNES STORE

So what you're saying is, you plugged your iPod in, iTunes popped up the message that it pops up asking if you want to sync the iPod and that doing so it will wipe the iPod to sync with this new computer, and you clicked it.

Because iTunes doesn't wipe iPods without a confirmation.

Yeah it does. It auto syncs and if you you no longer have the song or aren't authorized to sync it, it will delete it from you're ipod

No, it doesn't. If you plug an iPod into a computer that it is not set to sync with, it specifically prompts you to see if it should sync or not. Given that the computer in question was new, then iTunes would be in a situation where it would have to prompt in order to delete files.

I have an mp3 player that I can see in "My Computer" and just copy music over to it.

I just got an IPOD and loaded some songs via Itunes but I can't see the IPOD under "My Computer"

Can this be done? What do I need to do?

Thanks.

Under the options of iTunes when your iPod is plugged in, you can select a option called, "act like a external hard drive." or something like that.

However, even after you do that, you can't just drag music to it.

Any time you connect an iPod to a computer (Mac or PC) that hasn't "seen" that iPod before, you will get a window asking if you want to automatically sync or not.
iTunes WON'T do it without your approval.
