Yes, they are. In my opinion, they sound about as good as 160-192 kbs MP3s, while being 20% smaller than 160 k MP3s. When iTunes for Windows came out, I re-ripped a lot of my CDs to get more into my iPod.

The quality is not CD quality imo, i notice some "tingling" on symbols in rock, and some bass sounds "flattened".

I really wish they would offer a high quality for an extra 10 cents or something, call it a *Gold Copy* and market spin the hell out of it.
