iTunes stealing .lnk file associations

All of a sudden on my wife's Windows 7 account, iTunes has associated itself with all the .lnk files. So basically any time she tries to open a shortcut, iTunes opens instead.

When I uninstall iTunes everything goes back to normal, but as soon as I install it again the same thing happens. I really hate the iTunes software but alas, she has an iPhone and needs this infernal piece of crap on our computer.

How can I fix this file problem?
