iTunes rip CD functionality blows!

First of all, it's slow as hell. Secondly, if it can't find the CD info there's no way of manually picking it, like WMP does. Lastly, it randomly starts playing the songs while ripping causing even more slowdown.

Cool - that's a pretty retarded option to have selected by default.

As for EAC + Lame could anybody provide more info on those. Have no idea what either is.

I'm more for just "iTunes blows." About the only decent capability it has is being able to handle sick numbers of illegally downloaded songs. But anyway, I guess that's my flame fodder for the day.

Argo, there are a lot of guides that you can search for on google that will give you an in-depth walkthrough for using EAC + LAME. i can't recall which one helped me, but i seem to have this bookmarked. it's a good place to start. you're going to want to convert to WAV first, then to MP3. if all works well, you can click the MP3 button on EAC to let it do it for you and then delete the large temporary WAV file (but follow the tutorial first to learn how to set it up).

EAC this program rips CDs but can't convert to mp3
LAME download this is the program called by EAC to convert WAV to mp3
EAC tutorial shows you how to set it all up

itunes simplicity is just too much to overlook... i could care less of course, generally use cdex, but for all the non-tech ppl out there.. it's soooo much easier to explain how to use itunes than anything else.

i also don't find the mp3 (160 vbr) ripping to be all that slow, pretty much on par w/ cdex+lame -aps for me.

iTunes is like the easiest program to use for ripping CDs. If you can't even get that to work, you should sell your computer.

If you've got the storage room (and time) it's a good idea to convert your source to FLAC. Then from FLAC (lossless), to whatever lossy format you happen to need at the moment. This beats having to look for a CD whenever you need to reconvert for a new player.

i contemplated that.. started to.. then realized.. i really don't have that much storage to blow on music. The main reason was to keep a backup copy in case my cds were ever lost or something... there are only a few i would actually buy again if lost/damage.

however, to save for converting to what my mp3 player plays... not a good idea. hence why i like mp3 so much. very portable. just wish itunes would use an external compressor... but i admit, i really do like the software, and may use aac.. heh

EAC + LAME is pretty simple once it's set up. Put in the CD, it identifies it, you click mp3 button and tell it where to save the files.

that's what you think. to the completely non technical person... setting where the mp3s end up, id3 tags... etc. yeah... too much of a headache for me to deal with when talking w/ non-tech folk. itunes, done deal, very little to explain, less on me. heh
