Perhaps try sending them an email asking for a once-in-a-lifetime redo would be in order. THey state in many places and at various times, that it is your personal responsibility to back them up.

I believe you pay for the download, not the songs (someone correct me if I'm wrong) - ie. you pay, you download, transaction complete. To download again, you must pay again.

Wait... Do you have an iPod? You can use winamp or another program to take all the songs from it and put them on your computer. You just have to reauthorize the songs.
 
You know... I often comment on why purchasing music from online stores is a bad idea... Had you listened to me, you wouldn't be going through this. Just a thought 😉 Btw, I mirror my collection to a second drive in my main rig, and will soon (after a hdd upgrade) be doing so to a second PC as well (tridundancy ftw!)

Yeah, and they made sure to let you know about it. Remember that checkbox you pressed okay on the first time you purchased music that let you know that you had to back them up because they wouldn't let you download it again?

Seriously, ask them nicely and they WILL help you out, but don't blame them for your carelessness...it jsut makes you look dumber and arrogant.

Purchasing from online music stores is nowhere near a bad idea. It's a bad idea not to back up your music, that's all. Along your thought process, I could say buying cds is a bad idea because they melt if left in the sun and they scratch easy. Not likely to happen, but if you take care of them, it's not a bad idea. There is your one analogy for the night.
 
I am going to sign up for safeshare for 25 bucks for a lifetime.... I can download tens of thousands of dollars worth of songs a month.... and it is completely legal! I'll show the stupid music industry!

The only benefit I can think of is instant access to music you want. The downsides (lossy formats, DRM, illegality in the case of allofmp3) far outweigh this though, imo. Why devote a hdd specifically to backing up music? I cram as much as possible onto the drive I mirror my collection to; game installs, etc.

-Frankly, that is only your opinion, and here is only mine: lossy formats aren't detremental to the lsitening experience in many cases. When I am driving in my car my Alpine's onyl dish out so much quality so I wouldn't be able to hear the difference ( i lsiten to music mostly in my car btw). In addition, AAC has never bothered me as I have been able to easily burn CDs or transfer the mto my ipod. Can I burn my collection repeated and give it to those who haven't paid for it? Perhaps not, but I have no quams with that.

-As the for the HD, it is my backup drive as it stores my backed up docs and emails and such.
