I just downloaded Coldplay's new album on iTunes, its listed as iTunes Plus but I see that all the files are .m4p (protected). I was under the impression that iTunes Plus files were DRM free and should be .m4a (unprotected).

Am i incorrect?

mine are .m4a, i believe.

EDIT: Well, I checked and that album is .m4p, on my machine as well. However, it plays fine when I deauthorize my computer. Still a bit shady, though, as I don't believe you can use .m4p files on any player but iTunes.

Yea, I tried to stream them to my PS3 but it came up as corrupted data. Checked on my mac and sure enough its M4P :(

hmmm... i have a few itunes plus. they are .m4a.

If only Amazon had a better layout. After using itunes since its inception, it is very difficult to switch.

I like to use iTunes, but if they start pulling this crap.. it's going to be AmazonMP3 fully from now on. :|

But the reason why I bought it via iTunes is that I had a $25 gift card to use. Oh well..

no argument there. Unfortunately, support mp3's also means supporting the big label companies not giving them to Apple. Mp3 will win out for me though. As is cost. But in the end, this really doesn't help the actual artist enough IMO.

itunes plus is a step forward, but the mighty $$ talks too. as it stands now, I use itunes to browse, and then buy it from amazon.

I am thinking of buying a Blackberry and would like to play all my iTunes music on it. If I strip my iTunes songs of their DRM will it reduce the quality?
