It looks like digital movie downloads are finally coming to life. I'm assuming they are going to be the same 320x240 resolution as current TV show downloads. I bought Seasons 1 & 2 of Lost and they don't look too bad full-screen or on a TV. Black areas are definately pixelated, like night shots. I wonder how long they will take to download? Do you think this says that Apple will be releasing some kind of set-top box?

I think I'm going to pass on this. Apple's video DRM hasn't been hacked yet, meaning you can only play iTunes shows in iTunes or on an iPod. If you want to watch the shows on TV, you have to connect your computer to your TV. No HTPC playback unless you run iTunes (dunno if that will run through MCE, SageTV, etc.), no playback on XBMC or other media appliance systems. I'm guessing you won't be able to burn the movie to DVD, either.

I own a Mac and use it as my primary computer, but I don't think I'll be buying any iTunes movies. The article talks a bit about Walmart and how they were left out of the deal and want to have their DVD prices be more competitive with the upcoming Apple movie releases. If you want to make your own iPod/iTunes movies, you can simply use DVD Decrypter & FairUse Wizard for Windows or Handbrake/Handbrake Lite for Mac; in a few months it will probably be as cheap to buy it at Walmart as it will be online :p

How do you feel about this?

That's crap. If I pay 14.99, I better well get the damn dvd. Not that I watch movies anyway, but if I did, I am 100% positive that I would not buy from this distrobution model.

In other news, it's good that Apple for cracked the mpaa envelope.

I'm interested to see where they take this. I was using a Mac Mini as my set-top box for awhile. Progress is happening on the HTPC front for Macs, albeit slowly. Elgato, the makers of EyeTV, finally released a full-screen 10'-interface version of their software for use on a TV. Front Row is shaping up pretty nicely. The dual-core Minis can handle HD pretty well. What I think would be great is if Apple released a Home Theater Mini with PVR capabilities and a kind of online-Netflix service - pay a monthly subscription, download movies, watch them, delete them, and download another one. I'd go for that. For now Netflix + XBMC will suffice.

Anyone who pays $14.99 for a 320x240 video file deserves all the names Apple bashers call them. The TV show ripoff is enough of a joke, this is just highway robbery.
