iTunes & ID3 Tags

I just got a 60gb iPod and installed and started playing around with iTunes. My library is a mess so I started updating the entries. When I later opened up WMP I noticed none of the updates had transferred.

Is there a way to get iTunes to update the ID3 tag when updating the library entries?

With great difficulty... itunes sucks for pretty much anything other than buying low bit-rate encodings from their store.

Use Media Monkey instead 🙂

? i'm pretty sure itunes uses the tags. it doesn't for non standard stuff like ratings but u should see the rest.

but for automated tagging i used tag&rename or music brains .. itunes is ok if u just want to make a small change, like add a year to an album, just select that album and get info on it, then change just the year and it'll update all the tags at once for just that bit

There is no automatic "built in" way to force it to update the ID3 tags from the file.

But thanks to the software development kit itunes has its mega simple to write an app or script that will do it.

Ottodestruct wrote some handy scripts and bundled them up into a HTA, I have a link to it on my page. He has in his blog all of the scripts in .txt format if you want to have a read.

btw, I looked at Media Monkey and decided to avoid it simply becuase I have no idea what version of ID3v2 its using (and there is no way to tell it to use ID3v2.3) that and I figure why use a 3rd party app that may stop development has limited support etc etc Apple made my iPod I may as well absorb iTunes.

I prefer to use 2 programs (Picard from Music Brainz and MP3tag) to groom my library both free, takes a little bit longer but I am very happy with the outcome. I discuss my "adventures" with tag editing for itunes on my site as well

iTunes (and most other apps it would seem) has an issue with ID3v2.4. So you may need to convert all your files to ID3v2.3 (the most obvious sign of this is iTunes not saving cover art).
