Itunes -- Do I have to have the song name listed first?

Why can't I drag the artist to be in the first column?

Also, the VERY first column is very small and has no markings in it. what is it used for?
 
ahh

the first column is for whether or not the song is on your computer i believe.... i noticed it when i pulled my music hard drive and itunes couldnt play my stuff....
 
I found that kind of annoying at first too - but just sort by artist, the song name becomes most important.
