iTunes burn audio CD - playlist will not fit

Audio CD's are 700MB/74min right? Why oh why won't iTunes (yes, latest version. yes, I just flashed the firmware on the CD/DVD burner in the Macbook.) burn a playlist that's not even 30min? Quality is CD quality right? The bitrate on the files shouldn't matter right? These are simple songs purchased from iTunes store. 256k quality maybe? The playlist clearly shows <30 min of song time total. Just stupid. There are like 6 songs here. I should be able to fit a ton more.

I'm a very technically literate person. I've got a Windows PC at home and I could easily try to burn this playlist to 2 or 3 CDs, or whatever iTunes wants, then rip them into MP3s on my Windows PC, then use some other non-iTunes program to burn my CD, but why should I need to resort to something like that? This is 2010 and especially after spending the dough on a Macbook and paying for legitimate tracks from the iTunes store, there has got to be some reasonable explanation for this.

Could you tell us a bit more about the error (screenshots are even better)? If you're burning them in CD audio mode, clearly it should work.

Just burn the CD on your windows rig

I tend to agree with you. The point is I shouldn't have to. It's my natural tendency to find alternative solutions as well. However, in those situations I often find myself spending 3x or 4x the amount of time a given task/project should normally take, and then I end up in the middle of such a project asking myself why in the hell I was stupid enough to go down that path.

If iTunes has the capability to burn audio CDs then I should be able to fit 74min of audio (or something reasonably close) onto a blank CD. This is literally <30min of music. And there's nothing unusual about this setup: Macbook <2yrs old, standard CD-R blank disc, 6 or 7 songs purchased through the iTunes store.

Thanks to other people for responding back. I will try to get some additional details when I get home from work. I'm also tempted to call Apple support like your average American lemming and blowing several hours just to find out what kind of "official" explanation might be had.

I agree with you as well philosophically, anyway. Stuff like this should just work without having to jump thru hoops. I love the iTunes streaming service for listening to radio stations, podcasts etc. I am streaming in our shop area right now. I love the iPod hardware, best in class by far. Using them together? Very messy and not for me. I sold my iPods cause it was too cumbersome, for me, trying to work with iTunes or without it. I won't add my music to iTunes any more, plus I almost always buy CD'S and rip them to FLAC for archival purposes and for playing on my home network. Lots of portable players today support this format and I can still rip to MP3 if I need to. I have other issues with iTunes forcing updates on me when I decline an update. I have another application set as default for playing CD'S. I can tell when they jammed the update thru cause it switches back to iTunes as default for my CD'S. I also get asked again to import my music and so forth and they stop asking me if I want the update. I said no the other day to an update and they jammed it on me overnight. PITA for me. iTunes and the iPod could have been a great marriage, for me anyway, but the union had irreconcilable differences so I separated them. I hate having to authorize computers and purchases if I swap hard drives etc., not my style. I realize I am not in the majority. I just want to be able to play the music I paid for legally when I want to and where I want to on any computer etc. just my preference. Pop your songs on a thumb drive and plug into your windows or Linux box and burn and enjoy. It just works without jumping thru hoops or calling for tech support. Good luck getting this resolved because it really ought to be working for you in this situation.
