iTunes App Region stupidity

Eug

I can't install vlc on my iPad Air 2 because the iTunes App Store won't let me switch store regions like before. Why?

I'd have to spend $80 just so I can change the store region?!

I'll have to use a workaround but this is dumb.

Create a new account.

Region changes are intended to be permanent to avoid copyright confusion. Remember DVD drives? They allowed you to change the region, but only a limited number of times before they were locked.

Or you can just spend the $80 to top off my Clash of Clans account.

I think it's already on my iMac's iTunes account so I'll load it from there. Otherwise I'll use a different email address.

The thing is, it is a free app.

Eug, VLC is not in the US or Canadian app store any more, not sure which region you are trying to download it from. But just get Infuse instead, it's better, especially the Pro version. Blows away every other player away.

The reason they are limiting your is likely due to price differences in different app regions. Adding $80 USD (or CAD or whatever) and then going to a region with significantly lower pricing will give you a lot more value and be possibly illegal (the legality of the grey market is up in question, if not just frowned upon). They aren't enabling people to do this.

And, like JAG87 said, VLC isn't on the US or Canadian app store anyway. There are some VLC utilities, but not the actual VLC player.

I had vlc on my imac's iTunes. I installed it from there.

I also use nPlayer but that has some audio issues with some files.

Now that Infuse 3 has gotten DTS support, I'll was going to get that too. I need to spend that $80 anyway. 🙂 However I can't get the free version to see my Synology SMB share. Works fine in nPlayer.

Infuse seems to be working with my SMB share now. It never actually sees the share on its own but if I manually enter the info, today it seems to work. So, I paid the $9.99 to buy the Pro app.

Also, for other shares it sometimes sees them automatically and sometimes doesn't but that doesn't matter since I dont stream from those other shares.

I'm currently using StreamToMe/ServeToMe for streaming from my server, and load files in VLC for local playback.

It seems Infuse would let me stream directly from a SMB share, and is better than VLC for local files since it has hardware acceleration?
