itunes alternatives??

Alex

Diamond Member
just got my ipod video and i'm lovin' it!
i hate having itunes installed though... not sooo much itunes but the fact that it requires quicktime...

i use MediaMonkey to sync my music but it can't sync photos, videos, contacts etc...

i've googled loads and haven't really found anything relevant so maybe i'm doing something wrong but basically i'm looking for an alternative to itunes for uploading videos and hopefully photos & contacts too...

any suggestions?

thanks!!! 🙂

anapod looks promising altho theres no mention of video sync on the site (or maybe i missed it it was late last night...) but anyway call me cheap but i just spend $500 on an ipod + acessories and i'm not about to cough up anything else to get it to work just cause 'i dont like' itunes...

i was wondering if there are any free/open source alternatives out there...

umm... cause i don't need it!

i NEVER view any .qt or .mov stuff...ever... and even if i did, there's Quicktime Alternative which does a great job of reproducing those in WMPClassic...

back in the day quicktime, much like realplayer, would sit in your system tray and take up resources and steal file associations and just basically be intrusive and annoying.

nowadays that might have changed but i simply don't want it on my system cause i don't have any use for it!

Nope. It still does all of that.

iTunes is sh!t too. You can't install iTunes without Quicktime and vice versa. Then iTunes is set to sync everything by default, find and move all of your music by default. You have to remember to change all of the settings before even using it. Otherwise everything on your iPod goes bye bye.

Any way, I forget what I use, but its a simple shell extension that simple makes the iPod into a drive letter when you plug it in. The same as any flash drive or external drive. Then you simply drag and drop. Works like a charm, I've actually been using the same thing since back in the day when I had an iPod, but I didn't have a mac and iPods weren't "technically" supposed to work on a PC. Yep, still have a first gen iPod so this may or may not work for the Videos

the ipod shows up as an removable device by default... but the music is in weird hidden folders F00, F01, F03.... FN so im not sure if its possible to copy music over but im aware there is shell-extension but it is paid afaik....

And how much?

mine is 60gb.... i paid $400 on amazon + $150 worth of acessories (in-ear headphones, wall-charger, protective case, car radio tuner)

so you can see why im reluctant to shell out more cash for ipod-related software when apple's stuff does the job...albeit with a few side effects (quicktime, which, i might add, has absolutely nothing 'quick' about it)

install itunes.

inestall quicktime alternative. it will, by default, uninstall quicktime for you and isntall quicktiem alternative.

problem solved.

I want an iPod....I have an Iriver H10....

1. syncing through Media Player sucks...
2. The GUI is slow when you put more than 1 GB of music on it
3. no after market stuff
4. for some reason, you have to wait over a minute for your computer to respond to the H10 after it was pluuged in.
5. the thing it self is not very stable.

I envy my gf's iPod mini.

I was an Apple hater until I got my iPod Video. I actually like it and iTunes and have never had a problem with it. As for your concern about iTunes and Quicktime, I just install iTunes and Quicktime together, then uninstall Quicktime, then reload Media Player Classic and Quicktime Alternative. Works like a charm.

Same here......I could be uploading music to my Iriver and my gf will show up, plug her ipod into her computer, re sync everything and be off while I am still there waiting for my Iriver to connect. I am *almost* an iPod lover now.
