I moved to Minneapolis and it gets pretty cold here in the winter. I have a pair of Thinsulate gloves that were good enough for NJ, but it's now time to think about gloves for here.

Gloves or Mittens? I think I might try mittens this year as it should keep my hands warmer, no?

I'm just going to be wearing them when I drive and walk around. I don't ski, so there are no issues with that.

Does anyone have any experience with 3 finger mittens? Are they useful or is it a gimmick?

Depends. I wear leather gloves to drive, but if I'm going to be doing an outside activity for a period of time, I want mittens.

So both.

Start with a good hat and coat. Keep your core warm and your hands will also stay warm. For anything but the most extreme cold (<-20F) I liked to wear leather gloves treated with sno-seal. Below -20F, it was time to switch to mittens. Get mittens with the leather facing so they don't wear out too fast scraping windshields.

Mittens are warmer, but kind of a pain if you actually need to use your hands for anything. There are lots of very warm gloves out there, the ones I use for snow blowing make my hands sweat when it's 5 degrees out. Just some off brand I bought at Menards.

Gloves for when clearing the driveway. No need for them when driving or walking outside.

Gloves are most versatile, but when it's insanely cold and you're spending a lot of time in that cold, you want mitts.

I usually stick with gloves, but i have mitts for skiing (since i get cold and don't want frozen fingers).

being from minnesota you should know about Choppers.

I just moved out here in Feb. so I had to google Choppers. It's leather work gloves and mittens hybrid.

I'm thinking about buying

http://www.canada-goose.com/products-page/mens-accessories/lodge-mitt

or

http://www.canada-goose.com/products-page/mens-accessories/womens-down-glove-duplicate

since they're on sale at Bloomingdales right now.

3 finger mittens look like they might be a good compromise too, Does anyone have any experience with that?

I don't know how you get good grip with mittens when driving, so I voted gloves.

I can't imagine any circumstance where I would wear mittens.

Mittens would probably be warmer, but gloves at least allow for the retention of a little bit of dexterity.

And Thinsulate is....well, the word "insulate" is in there, but it seems to be pretty minimal, at least judging by how quickly my hands get cold.
Though my hands will also get cold if it's much below 67°F, and a bit below that they'll slow down and start to go numb. My body's evidently got a pretty lousy threshold for "Oh no, cold temperatures! Time to let the extremities freeze and die in order to save everything else!"

If all else is equal mittens will be warmer than gloves. But mittens are too damn dorky, so just buy really good gloves.

Gloves for every day getting around where you're not spending lot of time outside, mittens for being outside long, such as shoveling.

Except when the mitten part gaps open, letting the cold in.

Exactly! The loose part is also a hazard when driving!

Why not both?

I would rather have gloves where the inndex and middle finger are separate, but the ring and pinky fingers are together.

I don't know how you get good grip with mittens when driving, so I voted gloves.

I don't see how mittens would be worse. I'm not wearing the slippery wool mittens that don't stop the wind.
