It's funny, but two creatures featured here -- the fox and the red-tailed hawk, are what got my two, free range, tree roosting chickens -- at least some kind of raptor likely got my hen first, and we do have red tails here. The hen bit it early on, but my rooster Rainbow was with me for years.
I never knew an animal with a brain the size of a pea could have so much relatable personalty, but that dude was ok!
A fox finally got him. I was angry, and even considered laying for him with my .22, but, eh, predation is the order of things in nature, so I let it go.
For my fave I choose the river otter. They're rare these days, but a couple of years ago one took up residence in the creek in back of my house for at least that summer. I felt honored.
Over the years, I've occassioally had herons land in my stream as well. I can go see them regularly over at the nature center on Lake Galena in Peace Valley Park, just a couple of miles away.
Very cool, and they look positively prehistoric in flight, which this stock photo above doesn't quite capture.
. . . Which reminds me, one of my fave beings of nature doesn't move much at all. It's a tree, also in the Nature Center, the Pooh Tree.

I always make sure to visit it when I'm there. The Pooh Tree is hollow on the inside and has enough room for a couple of adults to stand and move somewhat freely about. Although amost completely hollow, this tree is still alive and healthy.
