His "proper name" isn't written in English. It's phonetically translated.

I see it all the time with people's names. I've known Asian people whose last name would sound similar but be smelled differently in English. However, in their country, they had the same last name with the same spelling.

Exactly. His name isnt english - we romanize it to the closest we can get it to sound. Osama, Usama, whatever floats your boat.

Same reason depending on what takeout you go to, you could be eating general tso's, tsao's or zhao's chicken.
