Having more fat people just makes the few fit people more attractive. Also as more people get fat accommodations will be adjusted to account for their considerable carriage. This means bigger seats at the movies, larger portion sizes of food and just bigger everything. I really don't see a downside as long as I don't have to interact with these people outside of work.

The problem with this attitude is that it will most likely affect ones you care about. I have at least 3 good friends who I care deeply about, and they are freaking obese. 1 is a couple, so they enable each other. The other is a guy who is big boned but also eats like shit and telecommutes full time so doesn't move much off the computer and couch. I tried getting them motivated to come lift some weights but they are too embarrassed to do it. I think only the doctor telling them that their life is in danger is what will get them to the gym.

What I'm saying is that it's easy to just say fuck it, let them die if they don't have the same willpower as me. Reality is that there are some really good people who are addicted to sugar and have no idea how much their life would change for the better if they made lifestyle changes. What we need to do is figure out ways to get them to change their lifestyle, especially people who actually contribute to society and don't have a mean bone in their body.

I posted a pic a few pages ago. I do eat whatever I want, just not all the time. I never ever count calories, carbs, or whatever else. What I said was, "You can eat what you want and still be fit, you just have to off set it with exercise and not eat like that every day."

They key is, to not eat like that every day. I ate shitty last night. Going out tonight for drinks too. I do not eat very healthy usually, but I do a few key thing that I think helps. I never drink a soda unless I am mixing with liquor. I don't drink energy drinks. I drink water all day. I go to the gym about 4 times a week. I do races, did the Tough Mudder this year, have another similar one end of this month. I hike mountains several times a year. Last one was 7k feet up and 14 miles round trip. I stay active, which is important. But yes I do eat shitty, and fairly often. I do cook at home a few times a week, usually fish and chicken with veggies of some kind. I also eat fast food about twice a week.

I know not everyone can do that, not everyone is made the same. I understand I am pretty blessed. But for me I can get away with it. I was about 220lbs and looked the same, just more muscle until I went on a 7 day cruise with a day on each side in Ft Lauderdale. I did not work out a single time, and got the alcohol package that was 15 drinks a day. I didnt eat much, just drank and laid out. Swam in the ocean walked around a lot. Lots 10lbs of muscle in that time.

My friends always say one day my eating will catch up to me, and it probably will. Then I will have to do better. But for now at 40, I think I'm doing alright.

Genetics is a huge factor IMO in "fitness", a lot more than I think people want to believe it does. One can be strong, athletic and look decent with out ever counting calories and basically eating whatever they want. But for most people like me, if I lived like that I'd balloon up, which I did at one point. I'm a believer in eating whatever you'd like within reason, but I think tracking to some degree is important if you want to maintain your current weight long term. Even going over your maintenance calories by just 500 a week... every single week will quickly add up to fat gains. For people who don't keep very active, this is pretty easy to do.

I do not disagree with anything you said. We all know someone who doesn't do much and still is fit looking, while not living that life style. I know I am very lucky, I catch shit for it all the time. But it works for me, until one day it doesn't.

Easier to not eat it than to burn it off

By constantly eating low calorie "naked" (i.e. no dressing) veggies for lunch and dinner, weight is super easy to lose for slow metabolism folks....no exercise required.

Though some exercise is good for everyone to establish some muscle tone.

Do want. How much?

It was an endurance and breathing study I decided to take that actually paid me $180 at the completion of the study. Since I was on the fire department, I decided it might be interesting to see how fit I actually was versus what I thought I was. The study required you be overweight by a certain amount, in this case it was at least 50 pounds but not more than 80 lbs, according to their calculations before the study started. I was barely 50 pounds overweight at the time, according to them, but in reality I was only about 25-30 pounds heavier than my weight while running track in high school.

Part of the study involved putting a tube in my nose to measure my breathing rates while I rode a stationary bike with sensors attached all over my body. I informed them before the study I had a slight heart problem with an irregular rhythm at times, and not to worry about it because I had it all my life and have had a full cardiac examination several times before that turned up nothing abnormal. Go figure.

Well, during one of the bicycle tests they were suddenly alarmed and thought I was going to die when they saw a lot of irregular spikes on my EKG and they called a code red and had a medical team stand by in case I had a cardiac arrest, which of course, I didn't. They asked me if I wanted to stop riding the bike, and I shook my head no, because I certainly didn't want to repeat having a tube stuck down nose again, UGH. So that was all kind of exciting for them I guess. But I had warned them ahead of time. They were also a bit stunned by the fact I still had the lung capacity of a 18-20 year old, while I was 44 at the time.

The heart problem is why I am probably not as active as I should be, and if I had to choose between working out regularly and dying from getting a heart attack or being a bit more sedentary and watching my weight and living longer, then obviously I choose the latter.

Hmmm, thanks?

Not too bad for 40 I guess.

You're 40 and you're ripped like that?

If that's really you in that picture, you have to realize that you're in the 0.001%. There aren't that many folks like you out there so telling folks to suck it up and just exercise to get fit is like telling some poor schmuck to win the lottery to get rid of his money problems.

We have to get passed the glorified civil rights of no shaming for obesity. Obesity leads to other diseases and physical problems. I have a cousin who is in terrible shape, and I pray that she can stay out of the hospital for more than a month at a time. She is wheelchair bound, has titanium in her shoulders and hips. Her legs are 3-4 times the size of a normal woman.

Her kids are all obese or morbidly obese. Two of four are in horrible physical condition. One is in a wheelchair. Another I'm afraid is not long for this condition. All their lives mom put 5 times as much food on the table than they needed, because she didn't want them to go hungry. One had that band surgery 10 years ago, because she was so overweight that the doctor would not operate on her back, until she lost significant weight. I'm talking over 200 pounds of weight loss. Ten years later she has put back 100 of those pounds. Surgery is not the miracle everyone is touting, because long term it doesn't change eating habits. And once you are in that condition, exercise becomes a limited option. Even normally walking becomes a challenge.

I feel really bad for people in the medical community, like nurses, aids and EMT's, who have to lift people weighing 300 or 400 pounds and more.

It's obviously not working for most. Nationally there is a crisis of fatties and reminding them of this fact is simply not having much of a positive impact.

Gives me chills to look at those dishes.....not only for the carb/calorie/nutritional value count, but also the "taste like cardboard" microwave look. :colbert:

ITT: people who don't know what BMI is for

anyway, here's why people are fat:

not so bad, broccoli is overcooked, but that's probably 2 servings of carbs right there at least

11825622_990650837646448_8756836932241917057_n.jpg

2 mass servings of carbs, plus a roll. easily 3 servings of carbs.

carbs, corn (which is carbs), and whaterver that other stuff is

big pile of carbs, chicken covered in carbs, canned peas, a couple of random shrimp thrown in, and italian malt liquor

something low carb for once doingitwrong.gif

3 carbs and not much else (i think that's dirty rice on the left)

carbs and chicken covered in carbs. with 1 little shred of lettuce. or maybe it's confetti.

Yes I am 40, 41 in Dec. And yes it is me, just blotted out my face because I don't trust everyone here. I admitted I'm lucky... but I do put forth effort. As I say this, waiting for my girl to get ready before we go out for drinks and bar food.

Its beyond that. Exercise breaks down parts of your body forcing you to regrow. This is keeping you young.
