I gotta put some new tires on my G35x.

I run my stock 17s with a/s tires in the winter. I have a set of 18x8.5 forged wheels i run in the summer. I've selected to run a 245/45/18 summer tire.

I've been shopping for moderate priced tires. So fair i've came up with

Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-2 @ tire rack. They are $120 a peice w/$ 80 rebate. Cost out the door is $523.85 and $80 rebate ( assuming i get this w/o problems) $443.85

same tire at Treaddepot is $484.60 ( not sure if i can get that $80 rebate)

General Exclaim UHP was another recommended tire for me. $545.32 shipped from treaddepot.com and $600.14 at tirerack.

Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport
at $708.96 if price didn't matter i would rock these easily.

Nexen N3000 $450 on ebay after 8% bing

Dunlop sport maxx thru tires-easy.com $464.48 I dont know too much about these guys. I looked them up. average people. one guy claim he was sold 5 year old tires, no shop would mount them, CS was only 1 guy and would not refund.

AFAIK there isn;t a law on selling old tires, with time the compound degrades and such. But i've read in some cases tirerack has done it too with their clearance tires which is one of the tires i've picked.

I've heard that the F1 line tends to either develop a lot of noise if they aren't rotated every 3k miles. I think its the tread pattern. But they also been mentioned to outperform the others for the price if you exclude the noise. The general tire i really never had 1st hand opinion on but a lot of guys from the maxima forum love them in terms of budget tires.

I dont have much experience in tires. I ran a get of yoko avids A/S on my 98 maxima for 50k miles and i loved them. I had a set Michelin PS2 there were like $300 each tires. When i bought the wheels. i like them but they worn out rather quickly. Guy said he had them for 10k and i put 5k and they are at the wear bars. GF had a set of BFG traction T/A and i like them on the lancer.

This is my first summer set of tires. If the tires last me 20k at the rate of me driving these will be 3-4 years with me. What would you guys suggest me run. I'm really looking at a $500-600 ballpark shipped to me, since my local installer wants $75 to install these.

This will be for a G35 AWD sedan. I do spirited highway driving every so often. No auto-x or anything however i'm going to be attending events i might just for fun run in one.

I'm leaning towards these F1's from Tirerack. their rebate expires 4/3, the tire noise is about the main thing i fear. Not sure how the return policy is. My local discount tire doesn't carry that f1 line so i cant PM

for summer only I would look at:

Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec

Bridgestone Potenza RE-11

Falken Azenis RT-615

Toyo Proxes T1R

Kumho Ecsta XS

Just put a set of Falken 615s on my miata for summer/autox seem to be working pretty well so far. They are coming out with a new version called 615Ks which are suppose to be better but are also a lot more expensive. Anyway if you can find the old 615s in your size they are unloading them cheap to make way for the new version which is why I bought mine.

A couple thoughts for ya: you're shopping in the middle of the range for performance tires. IMO, that's not a good place to shop. You're not adding much performance for the dollar over the lower end summer tires.

If you aren't willing to commit to the price & compromises of high end summer tires (Bridgestone RE-11's, Dunlop Z1 Star Specs), then I would go on the low end of the summer tires. Those tires are still great to run and would save you a lot of money. Just check the Tire Rack or other reviews to make sure wet performance & your other requirements are met.

FWIW, I'm running RE-01R's on my car. Yes, they are stiff and loud. But they stick like glue, even with a stock suspension. If a set of Dunlop Z1 Star Spec's aren't in the budget come tire purchasing time (which are a far better value than the RE-01R replacements, the RE-11's), I'm probably going to go on the low end with the Sumitomo's.

I'd suggest looking at the high end Sumitomo tires, if they're in your size. The reviews are decent and the price awesome. FWIW, I have a set of their high end all seasons on my 97 Legacy wagon and like them a lot. Granted, that car isn't driven nearly the same ;)

what tires are in the high range and low range then... you said my tires are mid range, and i thought they were all low end tires

The R760 sport to my thoughts was a high end tire, along with the PS2 that i have on now.

With my budget i am exactly targeting the lower end of the tire world... I'm also consider going high performance all-seasons if the tread wear is a little better, going with a better tread wear i can move my budget up a little more... The bridgestone 960 line looks pretty nice for me...

after talking to people who own the F1 line, i'm dropped them from my main target. So right now i'm really considering picking up one of these in this order.

1.General UHP @ about $139 380 tread
2.Hankook Ventus V12 evo K110 @ 146 280 tread
3. Sumitomo HTR Z III @ $150 300tread

the star spec one is $180 200 tread

sumitomo were mentioned a couple of times to me as a good medium price/performance tire.

I dont drive hard, just the every now and speed. I picked up a G35 and not a TSX for a reason as a DD.

If you are just a normal driver which is what it sounds like you don't want the super high performance tires like star specs. They would just be a waste.

the Exclaim UHPs are the favorite of GTI owners for a cheaper replacement tire

Yep I put them on my 01 Corvette. Went from runflats to these. Rides softer, sidewall is softer, but not sure how ti measures up to other non-runflats in that area. But dry and wet traction is great and has a decent treadwear.

Check out Hankook Ventus V12 Evo K110. Ridiculous name for a great summer tire. I'm actually surprised at how well they grip. I chose them mainly because they won a low-buck summer tire comparo in one of the car mags. I haven't been disappointed.

EDIT: Most every high performance tire will get somewhat noisy at it wears. I think it has a lot to do with tread pattern. It really sounds like you'd be better off with a set of high performance all-season tires...unless you feel that you drive aggressively enough in the summer to benefit from summer tires. Would certainly be cheaper. Something like a an Advan S.4 or RE960.

I guess you're right, I had my eyes caught on the Bridgestone 760's. Any of those should be a good budget tire.

I do have to second that summer tires will be louder than the all seasons on your 17's, and the ride will be firmer too. Fast highway driving won't benefit much from high performance tires, and your noise & ride quality will suffer regardless. Better tires will help braking and cornering, not as much high speed grip as that is more determined by your chassis & suspension (in street cars of course).

The General UHP's might be more your speed. Better than regular all seasons, inexpensive, good in most circumstances. IIRC, the tread compound is such that you can run it in cold weather even. Accordingly you won't get as much dry traction as a higher end summer, but everything is a compromise.

Do they have any ratings or reviews? Try resellerratings.com

If it's not much more than TireRack, you might be better off getting from them to avoid hassle.

Also, Discount Tire Direct has an eBay store. You can get 8% off via Bing cashback if they have what you want there.

I have ordered from treaddepot before. No problems for me. I think I got 4 tires from them. Came the same as tires.com or tirerack

Says on their front page, use discount code DCTD25 for $25 off $300+ of 4 tires.

you want anecdotal reports? who actually buys 5 sets of tires and actually tests them scientifically anyways. Any comparison would be old worn tires to new ones anyways. self report opinions on tires are worthless, unless they explode on the spot they probably are good enough for regular driving.
go to the consumer reports site or go to the library and look up the tire report.
