It's that time again. Where is the cheapest auto insurance?

Right now I have AAA Michigan and for 2 cars (94 Celica and 2000 Cherokee) they want $3500/year. I'm starting to look to switch and so far Progressive has quoted me $1300/6 months. That would be $2600/year.

Where do you get your insurance?

BTW, I have 1 speeding ticket that comes off my record in October and my wife turns 23 in August which would lower the rate again. (You get a discount when you turn 23 in MI.)

try allstate 🙂

Becareful of the really cheap ones, their agents dont have to take a class to become certified. Also, i believe State Farm might be going bankrupt, so stay away from them.

How old are you? Just wondering.

<Edit> Wow, my message post count equals my birth year 🙂 </edit>

26, although I got the rate when I was 25.

That's a pretty bold rumor. State Farm is the largest auto insurer by far.

Erie Insurance Group is the "bestest cheapest" auto insurer that I know...but they only write policies in a dozen states or so. I have 100/300 coverage, full collision/comprehensive on my 2001 Accord EX and pay $940 a year. The same policy with State Farm is about $1300. I live fairly close to Philadelphia city limits so my rates are artificially inflated...if I lived in a more rural location, Erie would charge me only $500-$600 a year. Drop the collision and I might pay under $400/year. Erie does offer some unbelievable rates, but they can get away with it because they are strict on who they underwrite (like Geico).

Progressive is generally high because they tend to underwrite more risky drivers.

this is a rumor that is circulating aorund insurance companies. My girlfriend works for Allstate, so i hear all the gossip. State Farm insured many of the people and things lost in the WTC. The govt. will bail them out, most likely, but they are in rough waters right now.

Frankly, I don't think State Farm insures businesses and commercial buildings. They insure autos, houses, life and personal property...basically individual consumers/households, not industrial customers.

If State Farm "goes out of business", it may just be a subsidiary of their. The government will not allow the whole organization to just crash and burn (this is different than Enron). If you have an auto policy through them, I wouldn't worry.
