It's so nice to have a "Guy"

It's very nice to have a mechanic you can trust. After trying a few places in the area I finally found someone that I know does good work and charges fairly (I've had a string of auto problems inexplicably)

It sucks when you're new to an area and have to do the old yellowpages (online now I guess) search and random pick based on an ad and then have a subpar or bad experience.

So yeah I've got a "Guy" now, hurray

Yeah I got one of those.
He fixed my speedometer for free once, no doubt hoping to win my undying allegiance.

Unfortunately for him, my car doesn't require much work these days.

Agreed. A good mechanic, trustworthy mechanic is hard to find. And, you really can't be 100% certain of people's recommendations. i.e. Most of the people getting ripped off by mechanics don't have a clue that they're getting ripped off by mechanics. If they did, they wouldn't go to those mechanics. And, if they did, a lot of places (chains such as Monroe; at least my local Monroe) would go out of business.

Of course, since you don't sound like you're knowledgeable about car repairs, there's really no way for you to really know if your "guy" is 100% honest. My father-in-law had a mechanic who he trusted completely. He made an appointment for my car to have its annual inspection done by his mechanic. He even drove it there for me. My car checked out perfectly, except it needed two new wipers. So, he installed them, since my father-in-law had okayed him to do anything really minor that it needed to pass inspection.
The odd thing: I had just replaced one of the wipers the previous week - one was brand new. And, while I would normally replace both at the same time, the other was in perfect condition. "But, he showed me that both of them were torn." Well, sure, maybe they were. But, they weren't torn the day before the inspection.

For that very reason I will replace my wipers BEFORE an inspection AND bring my damn receipt with me. The last time I got my car inspected they pulled the whole "You need new wipers to pass.". I showed them the receipt of my purchase of the two wipers the same day and they gave me the inspection for free and offered to change my oil for free, which I denied and left.

I don't understand what makes these people think it's okay to blatantly rip people off because they might be as educated as the mechanics. It really pissed me off, and I refuse to go back there for any reason and tell my friends to avoid it as well.

My uncle is a Ford Master mechanic. I get to joke around with him while he works on the car, get the parts at cost, and pay him around $30-$35 an hour. Doesn't get much better than that.

Accept when I am the one buying at cost and installing on my own.
