Rejoice: PS3s across the land are now once again playable. That's the word according to our friends at Joystiq, who say that the clock issue affecting "fat" PS3s has been somehow resolved and games are once again working correctly. We're not sure if this means Sony's fixed something on the network side or if the internal clock just ran past a certain time, but at least our long nightmare is seemingly over. Hit up Joy for a quick Q/A on the whole situation, including a way to potentially save lost trophy data.

Sony: Don't turn on your PS3 until PSN bug is fixed

Uh, wow. That PlayStation Network issue that struck late last night has officially ballooned into a full-on PlayStation disaster: Sony is now saying you shouldn't use "fat" PS3 models at all, since a clock-related bug might cause
data loss. The PS3 slim isn't affected, however -- which explains some of the conflicting reports we heard last night. Sony says they're working to get this fixed in the next 24 hours, but for now it looks like older PS3 owners are out of luck -- we'll do our best to keep you entertained, guys.

I know this was being discussed in the psn network thread, but it deserves it's own thread for the day.

Sorry for the post hijack, but people won't see this on the fourth page.

CECHA0x - affected
CECHC0x - affected
CECHE0x - affected
CECHG0x - affected
CECHH0x - affected
CECHK0x - affected
CECHL0x - not affected
CECHP0x - not affected

Those are the Phat SKU's, stamped on the back of the console. If you've got one of the affected SKU's, don't use it. If you have an unaffected SKU, use it.

Not ALL Phats are down.

From Engadget's Comments:

The broken PS3's will fix themselves at 7:00 PM EST (4:00 PM PST) since that's when the clock will roll over to "March 1st" on the PS3s.

The problem is that anyone who was playing when the bug hit and earned trophies (like me) will likely have corrupted data on their PS3 (timestamps with a Feb 29, 2010 date). Whether this data will self correct or require a firmware fix from Sony is the real question. This is why Sony is telling people not to turn on their PS3's so that the data isn't corrupted in the first place.

For many people (like me) that warning came too late.

What a weird thing to have happen. I don't get why the clock code is different on certain ps3s but whatever. I'm also confused on how it stops you from playing your games even offline. Seems like an absurd amount of functionality to be dependent on something as small as the clock. =\

Not all games are affected, just some of the games with trophies, and all of the online only games.

I agree it's irritating not to be able to play MW2 or Uncharted single player because I'm not connected to PSN.

The software is the same, so it must be something about the hardware.

I notified people about it today.
Some retard kept trying to tell people it was a virus even after I told him what was causing it...

Besides save data what else could you lose? Trophies are hosted by Sony's servers right?

Also why does this bug affect single player games with trophies? I know for 360 games you can still get achievements offline and then it just updates next time you sign in. Does the PS3 use an always online system to try to prevent achievement whoring? In other words, when they pull the plug on the PS3 for good all of these games will be unplayable?

No, trophies are stored on their servers, and you can get them offline and sync them when you return online. The problem is that the clock is resetting itself, which is a screw up in the system itself, somehow messing with the games and save data methinks.

Oh ok, cause now that I think about I'm pretty much always connected with the wi-fi. So this whole trophies thing is only related to this clock glitch and has nothing to do with PSN?

uh oh, i think i got the bug on my ps3.

i was playing borderlands all yesterday. When i was supposed to get a trophy for completing this mission in the game, i didn't hear the ding or see the icon on the top right corner of the screen. so i went to the xmb bar and checked my trophies to find that borderlands is not even listed in my trophy list! hmm... i got worried, played a little more, quit the game and checked my trophy again. This time my ps3 tried to sync with the network but it failed, i got an error message. The system took me back to the trophy list and still, no borderlands...

uh oh...

didn't turn on the system today, i think i'll hold out till this storm is over.

Should we still keep the PS3 off even if it's been off since before last night and even if we disconnect it from the internet?

Best to leave it off until it can be determined that the rollover to 3/2/10 GMT (which the affected PS3s will think is 3/1/10) will actually fix the issue. Since this happens in 90 minutes, you don't have long to wait.

It seems like you can use the PS3 fine as long as you do not attempt to log in to PSN, but best not to risk it since there's very little time left until the theoretical date rollover fix comes up.

Basically, seems like all old models with BC (Backwards Compatibility, to play ps1/ps2) are affected.

Old ones without BC, some seem to be rolling fine right now.* But this is subject to risk, as not everyone is having the same experience.

Some slims that may have used old model components are also affected, but this is a minority. It was reported on one of the news sites, where slim owners were saying theirs was down as well.

Good thing ME2 distracted me..

It is the first time I've played my 360 instead of my PS3 in over a year, but it came at a great time!

That's what you get for a free online service!

j/k. This is a pretty weird glitch that I can't really fault Sony for. Not exactly something that's easy to test for.

well im good for now though. eBayed my modern warfare 2 yesterday after months and months of online play. had to break the addiction and get the old lady to stop nagging 🙂

People on gaf say if you disconnect your internet, reconnect it, then use the set the time from internet option it will fix everything..
