it's only a matter of time

:disgust::|

I'm in a high school... We get our internet through a county school cooperative type of place. They provide the filtering.

Recently, I tried to go to snopes to verify the validity of something I was being told in an email. Snopes was blocked. I appealed to the powers that be (on their autogenerated form if I thought the site was improperly blocked)

The reason it was blocked is because they have a forum there where people can post messsages... and it would be dangerous for students because they could post personal information and be preyed on by pedophiles. (who would go to Snopes to do that?!)

At the same time, parents are calling the school and complaining because students are printing out the uncensored lyrics of songs, filled with profanities and taking them home. Most of those sites aren't blocked.

THEN, today, I discover that I can no longer access EBAY. (Grrrrr) (I have ordered more things for my physics class on Ebay than I have ever purchased on ebay for myself.)

It's just a matter of time before someone lets the blocking "guru" know that there are forums here, and the ENTIRE site would be blocked... not just the forums, but all of Anandtech... all the reviews, etc.
Personally, I think the blocking "guru" is a moron if he hasn't figured out that there is a list of the top forums on the internet (Anandtech is 11th or something like that?) and that he should block them all as a matter of policy.

Your probably right, it'll get blocked. I'm kinda surprised it's not already...

Of couse it shouldn't, but that's a decision that requires thought, right? (which forums are good/bay).

Do you have that list of 'top' forums? I'm interested to know.

Maybe you should suggest to them a type of filtering that allows faculty to have less restricted access for purposes that you have described.

Although high schools probably don't want to put forth the time and effort into the sort of thing that could make a school better. at Highschools across America.

I'm sure the 'blocking guru' is just some jockey doing what his boss, who has AOL and thinks memory is storage, is telling him to.

Honestly, I don't know what these schools are scared of...the problem is that parents are leaving the PARENTING part of being a parent to the teachers and administrators, when they should be doing it themselves.

Oh, me? No, I'm just his manager. ;)

Surely your not suggesting that students be allowed to visit:
General [M]ayhem General discussion forums at #12
Fvcked Company Off-topic message boards at #22,
ASP.net -2 RateMyBody Picture rating and dating website forums at #38, or
Overgrow Forums Marijuana growing discussion at #43...

While it's interesting to see the top boards, it's not a 'safe' list.

Well, I requested a review of snopes... I received a reply that said it would not be unblocked because the site has a forum on which students can post.

So, I went to the top 650 forums with the most traffic, and guess what?! Snopes wasn't on there.
But at the same time, I was able to access virtually every one of those forums that I tried...
I sent them an email. If it's someone's job, then perhaps they can do a little better of a job. I agree about not letting students post on forums. (but the teachers can't be trusted or something?!)

I'll also suggest that I can work as a consultant, blocking questionable sites. :) Paid to surf porn all day! (just kidding about the last part) - but, I surely can do a better job than the one being done now.

But your not listing what should be blocked, but what shouldn't. Do you think those site's shoun't be blocked because they are on the 'top' list like AT? (BTW, I'm just playing devil's advocate, I agree AT, and the forums shouldn't be blocked). In other words, are the OK for students to visit, just because are popular?

ever BEEN to genmay? Unless you want your high schooler to grow up to be a semi-retarded fast food jockey, he shouldn't be going there during school hours (or at all)

anand is OK, but some forums are just screwed up. Unfortunately, few of the people in charge bother to check what forums are good and what aren't.

find the ip address of the website you want to visit and see if you can get past the filter by typing it in instead of ebay.com

try this for ebay.... http://66.135.192.88/

at home you can go to the command prompt... type ping (enterwebadresshere) and it will give you the ip adress of the website (easy way to do it)

pwn3d by a n00b!

Actually, the n00b assumed it was Gurck that thought this way. It seems that Phoenix86 (as well as a couple of other people in this thread) didn't read Gurck's post in a matter which would have allowed him/her to comprehend what Gurck actually said.

This is entirely what was said by Gurck: "I'm sure the 'blocking guru' is just some jockey doing what his boss, who has AOL and thinks memory is storage, is telling him to."

Phoenix86 reponse: "Memory IS storage, just like RAM and the HDD are BOTH memory. What do you think memory does to data?"

The n00b needs to learn how to to read and quote properly. :disgust:

But, I am! According to the response I received from them, *ALL* forums should be blocked. Yet, they missed a very large percentage of the most popular forums.
That'd be like blocking any site with bad language but forgetting to block sites with f-bombs on them.
