It's OK to be FAT (?)

So I've been seeing that around lately... people arguing for genetics and other reasons that cause obesity and basically there's nothing they can do about it. It's not their fault, so it's ok to be fat.

Where the hell did this stuff come from ? Is this the new wave of no-reponsibility arguments (with McDs is making me fat lawsuits), or just a an attempt ot make obesity socially acceptable?

I'm sorry, but if you're obese, there is something wrong with you. You are unhealty and will die sooner than average. And genetics or not, your BF content depends on calorie intake / consumption.

there are a very small percentage of fat people who are genetically screwed. if you travel to africa, europe, south america, or just about any other country you will find very few fat people compared to the US.

Genetically ugly people don't get laid either, so I don't see how this would change the equation.

I have always been a big guy with a large frame from an early age. I was heavy as a teen, but not really obese or overweight. Which is why I hate those stupid height/weight obesity formulas according to which, I am clinically dead now. I have very wide and big Ukranian shoulders. I ate very healthy as a teen but still weighed 230 pounds at 6'3" while running to school 2.5 miles every day, I had a very small gut. Genetically, I just have a very low metabolism.

It wasn't until college that 1) my diet changed and 2) my metabolism slowed even more. Working at a desk and stress eating didn't help either, and I fell into the american consumerism trap of drinking too much soda and eating out too much. Nobody really talks about how bad the crap they sell you is in this country, Coke and TV dinners, and processed cheese. My choices at the vending machines at work are a world of crap. How many items in your local supermarket are high in fiber and good for you? Compared to the number of kinds of cheese and saturated fats? A lot of the problem stems from companies who aggressivley market cheap, bad-for-you products that really work on weak-willed depressed fat people. And it's a true slippery slope, the more you eat, the fatter you get and the even more you feel like eating.

Now I am back home in VT eating with my hippie-ish family getting plenty of fiber and whole grains. It makes a world of difference staying away from all the processed junk.

Being a little fat is okay, but when you can't make it up a flight of stairs without feeling like dying, it's time to put the cheetos down.

I went to an entemann's store yesterday, and I noticed *EVERYONE* (with the exception of a 2 year old kid) was fat. They had carts full of cakes and cookies. WTF?

I was buying one small box of cookies, but since the line was taking forever to move I just left.

Japan used to have the highest life expectancy. It started to lower after Iron Chef and KFC became popular BTW. ;)

I am not responsible for myself, or anything that I do. I am a product of my environment and circumstances. My own decisions and actions have no affect on my present condition. I am blameless for any negative thing that may happen to me.

My grandmother is pretty fat and for the last 10 years or so hasn't eaten more than 1000 calories per day (due to cancer), yet she's still fat.

Not everyone is the same way.

IIRC, there are some thyroid conditions that result in a large amount of weight gain. Apparently, some people can eat <1000 calories a day and *still* gain weight.

It's genetic to be able to gain weight fast, but it's not genetic to be fat.

For people to easily gain weight and say "I only eat fast food once a week" Heck even once a month is too much then, you have to live according to your genetics then, sorry but if you give in then you are just plain FAT.

ANYONE can lose weight.

Can you show me pictures of people in Nazi concentration camps and in Ethiopia during the famine that are fat?

I'm not super slim, but I also have really bad metabolism. I eat a salad and a sandwhich every day for lunch I a gain weight if I don't run that day. The guy who sits next to me eats 3 pieces of the greasiest pizza ever, and than 2 King sized candy packs and stays slim as a bone.

Yep, when I lived in Europe it was extremely rare to see anyone under the age of 40 that was fat.

Out of every over-weight person I have ever met, I only know one that could not lose weight. Just couldn't. Her mother was huge, her grandmother was huge, and she was huge. Always had been. It was truely genetic.
But, she took the step neither had taken before and opted for surgery. She had her stomach stapled. It's horrible from what I hear but she has lost alot of weight. Now she is just your average looking girl. It's great.

Obesity is a big problem these days, but we are free to eat what we want. If only we were free to choose what our taxes would go towards.

This is why a basic dietitian class should be MANDATORY in high school.

People with Thyroid problems need to go for low to no fat foods then. Spinach salad's and stuff like that.

OR go with the rule of calories in calories out, you want that burger?? fine, see you on the treadmill for 1.5 hours after. I don't care what the disorder is, fat can be burnt off. Some are just at different rates.
