It's official: Jeep GC getting a diesel...

Nice, if they only had this about 5years ago it would have been my purchase -_-

what a crappy article. WKs had a diesel option in 2007-2008. the engine wasn't really pushed and MB had to pull the engine due to CA diesel restrictions (stupid CA).

it looks like the new engine will come from VM Motori since they are the makers of the diesel model that is getting exported. from wiki, "A 3.0 litre turbocharged diesel V6 developed and built by Fiat Powertrain and VM Motori (with Multijet II injection[30]) rated at 177 kW (241 PS; 237 hp) and 550 N·m (410 lb·ft) of torque."

i would buy it depending on how much the premium is.

Fuel economy for the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 3.0-liter turbo diesel engine is rated at 10.3 L/100 km on the urban cycle and 7.2 L/100 km on the extra-urban cycle. For the combined cycle, the fuel economy is rated at 8.3 L/100 km.

That isn't bad...so about 28.34 MPG combined. Nothing revolutionary, but nice seeing it come to the US if these numbers hold true.

I believe it will be better than that because of newer transmissions since that piece was written.

There will likely be a 6 or even 8 speed auto with the diesel.

Fail. welcome to 5 years ago.. 😀
I always loved the GC diesel, but man they are so rare around these parts.
Well fuck.. I never saw this being advertised. I wasn't a big fan, visually of the older GC's (I did like the 90's I believe, but not the refresh since then to before the ones from last year).

for everyone noting 28+mpg i found an interesting article.

The European version has a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel offered in two different states of tune. The more powerful has 241 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, the lesser version is rated at 190 horsepower and 325 pound-feet.

The more powerful version accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 8.2 seconds, and is rated at 28.4 mpg on the European test cycle. That testing procedure usually returns fuel efficiency figures about 20 percent higher than the U.S. test, so we might expect combined fuel economy of 23 or 24 mpg.

hopefully the 23-24 mpg isn't true. i was really tempted to trade in the old honda for the diesel when it comes out in 2013.

I expect the 8 speed trans will seriously bump the highway numbers over the current 5 speed.

Another good point. The ZF 8spd transmission in several of the German luxury brands has bumped efficiency a good bit going from 6-8...going from 5-8 should definitely help.
