It's official...I'm an SSD convert!

Just installed an OCZ 128GB SSD and I have to say, this thing screams! It took me longer to install the drive in my case than it did to load Windows 7 on it. Boot times are down to around 10-12 seconds from power on to when I can open Firefox.

Programs load instantly and this thing makes no noise whatsoever...duh.

I still have some programs to load and tweaking to do but I'm extremely happy with it so far. My bios recognized it as a SATA hard drive and all I had to do in the bios was make sure my DVD drive was set to boot and that AHCI wasn't enabled (I've read that this can cause problems) and that was it.

System specs:
Intel i7 860
4GB G.Skill Ripjaw series DDR3 1600 memory
MSI P55 motherboard
blah
blah
blah...you get the picture and none of this other than what I mentioned really makes a bit of difference in Windows and how fast it loads anyway. 😉

That's impressive, but I wouldn't touch OCZ with a ten foot poll and/or a SSD until I can afford to put more than my OS on it as I rarely Boot my system. I might get a small one next year for Windows/Swap usage, but that's mainly just for the bragging rights. I'd prefer a 500gb for around $100, as that amount of space will pretty much hold everything I use regularly with lots of space to spare.

Yep, SSDs are awesome! I would suggest that you enable AHCI though. It does add a bit to the POST, but you should also see the in-Windows increase.

Really? They rate pretty well from what I've seen.

Yeah, I'd like more space but I'll just load all my main programs on it like Office, Photoshop, etc and all my data and backups will go on my 1TB drive.

Just seen too many "OMG my OCX[insert product here] is dead!" threads. Drives, RAM, Power Supplies, etc seem to all too often be dead. Not scientific by any means though.

Of course you are. You and 99% of everyone else who "converted." Only non-believers are those who haven't tried them.

C'mon guys, try it only one time. Don't worry, it isn't addictive and you can quit at any time. 😉

If Anand can brick one in a week I probably can too, I think I'll wait a while.

What are you doing? The way that Anand was able to brick his (defective prototype) SSD was to continuously write to it at MAX speed for a week straight.

From 500MB to 1TB over the past years, I've only ever had a problem with 1 hard drive. If SSD are anywhere near as reliable as normal hard drives, I wouldn't be too concerned. If you're worried about losing important data, you should be doing regular backups no matter what hard drive you have.

Having said that, I just have a TB black and am awfully curious to try an SSD! 😀

You've never had a problem? Never? Never Ever? Have you ever run SMART on them from the OS to get a breakdown of how they are doing on the 15-20 different criteria that make up the SMART test? Do you only keep hard drive for 4 months and then get new ones? I am sorry, I have make my share of blanket anecdotal statements in my day... but never having a hard drive go bad?

Welcome to the SSD party, its a great party too.

My pc takes about 20-30 just to post... LOL so the old I get into windows in 30 seconds does not apply to me..

can you do some speed tests let us know what you get?

use atto

here are my results.

I am running a c300 on a sata 6gb controler.

just ordered a intel x-25 160gb for my new laptop.

I put an ocz 120gb in the wifes pc.

I don't think (would hope) that most people aren't non-believers, but just simply non-investors.
SSDs are still pretty expensive, especially relative to capacity. I think pretty much everyone would love one, if they could afford it/afford the capacity tradeoff.

There are some loons who bang on about "reliability" though, because an SSD tells you when it's going to die, and the prefer mechanicals which can go *poof* at a moments notice.

I find it pretty amazing you still have to talk about 'converts', and having an SSD as standard makes people froth over the Macbook Air as 'the future of computing' when the Z for example pre-empted it by almost a year.

But I guess that's the typical public perception though - they don't think it makes that much difference, and only the dumbasses susceptible to whatever Apple makes picks up the party line.

e.g. When people I know - as they have done - show me their iPads as an example of how fast programs start compared to their laptops, I show them whatever machine I happen to have launching every program in the Office Suite one after another and they go 'oh.'

I've been HDD-free on all of the notebooks and most of the desktops I use since early '09 since being spottily SSD'd since '07. There is no sense to platter drives anymore for me.

SSD is nice but the price per GB is absolutely ridiculous. I don't want to buy one if I can only install my OS and 3-4 games on a $500 drive. I'm waiting for the price to go down.
