Im going to be switching over to intel when the new 8000 series comes out. ive made my decision and everything is going to be all fine and dandy. Ive been a AMD fanboy for a long while and have been happy for that time. Now i just want the newest technology at the lowest price and intel now has the hand in this. thinking of going with a 8400 and a GA-X38-DS4. i already have a 8600GTS and 2gb of G.skill ram to go into this setup so thats not a problem. tell me what you guys think about this whole decision im making and let me know what other/different parts i should/must get in order to make this a killer computer.

Same thing here, and you'll have a similar setup too. It's a good decision.

Mine will be: E8400 with GA-X38-DQ6, along with Crucial Ballistix 2GB 8500.

yea i want to upgrade my core parts first since my 8600gts can already run COD4 at 1440x800 res with most things turned off and its not that bad. i am mainly looking for a all round snappier system. like designing things in photoshop cs3, doing a little video editing on the side and some other things along the lines of cpu intensive software. also my amd shipped with a blown out thermal sensor on the chip and that really says something on the quality control of amd... and no im not knocking amd. like i have stated, i have beena fan boy of amd for quite a while and just need something better.

Only thing I would say is to go for a P35 board instead of an X38. No reason to go DDR3 right now and P35 is fine.

Intel's offerings are tempting, but I'm not ready to abandon AMD yet. The prospect of getting a quad-core processor for $180 is pretty good, in comparison to Intel's cheapest being $266.

Hmmm, X38 supports DDR2. Some X38 variants support DDR3.

For example my GA-X38-DQ6 supports only DDR2, but the X38'T' variant is for DDR3.

yea the gigabyte one i posted does not support ddr3 and thats a good thing 😉 not ready to make that big of a move yet. i guess i could ask one of the reviewers of the 8x00 series to compare it between a phenom and see what happens. its just that amd just fell behind and as much as i have loved their prices and products in the past, they dropped the ball and are now just falling behind even more with the soon release of these new intel chips. i realize that manufacturing and designing a processor is no cake walk but amd had all that extra time when they released their X2 series under the 939 platform which set intel back for a while. instead of working on a new platform they sat around and hung out, along with buying out ati since they thought they were in the clear for a long time. While amd was doing nothing intel was burning the midnight oil and producing the new core 2 series which is currently the leading competitor in the cpu game. sure amd produced the AM2 socket and all that. TBH i don't see a huge difference between my old x2 3800 S939 and my x2 4000 AM2 chip. both have virtually the same performance characteristics and even with the aid of DDR2 it still doesn't cut it.

Agree. DDR3 is way to expensive, PCIe2.0 is of little point as of now, 2 x16 crossfire..well... wonder how much fps can you squeeze out of that compared to a P35 crossfire.

I've stuck with amd since the beginning and have no intention on switching now. The market is finally working the way it's suppose to. Competition driving the prices down. About time intel caught on to that. Do you think if intel was the only guy on the block they'd lower their prices? Nope. I'll stick with amd. One day Amd will be on top again and the next Intel it's the way things work. The same goes with ATI and Nvidia.

Maybe not more fps, but since ATI has so many bugs running crossfire on top games, and AA and AF is horrible compared to nvidia...I pretty much would not look at intel chipsets for dual vga. I would go 780i....

i agree with you on the prices part. but what do you mean by the way things are going now is a good thing? AMD is behind and intel is just pushing them back farther and farther and with the release of the 45nm process how will amd be able to catch up in a reasonable amount of time?

Because I've already been there. Well I have. For years AMD was always second fiddle but that didn't bother me at all. Some years they were top dog. Comes with the territory. I'm not at all worried about it. The new batch of Quadcore's are suppose to come out this month supposedly with that error fixed. The XO comes with a word processor, web browser, calculator, PDF reader, a few games, three music programs, a painting application and a chat program. It also has several programming environments of varying complexity, allowing users to access - and change - the underlying code of many of the applications. This is made possible by the fact that the XO runs the Linux operating system.

This last fact engendered initial hostility from Microsoft, though that has apparently abated. What proved more problematic was the hostility of Intel, the chip manufacturer, which may have stemmed from the fact that the XO's processor comes from AMD, an Intel competitor, and possibly also the fear that a successful OLPC would prejudice the chances of selling billions of Intel-powered machines to the world's poor.

Yep, X38 is a Crossfire board (and expensive), seems a waste for a single Nvidia card. A good P35 should do the job nicely.

I have also decided to leave AMD after a very long time...It was fun, but the time for me to upgrade both of my systems has come...

I'm upgrading to a P5N-T Deluxe & a Maximus Formula...Both are DDR2 systems & both will run E8400's...

The P5N-T system will have 8GB of DDR2-800 & SLI & the Maximus will have 4GB of DDR2-800 w/ XFire...Both will run on Vista 64...

These are very exciting times...I decided to go all out on both of these systems since I've never been able to afford top of the line components in the past...

I can't wait for these CPU's...They're holding me up...lol
