This is definitely a victory for Sony. True they spend lots of money promoting blu ray, but guess what it worked. They're the only game in town now. Even though you say Toshiba never really put any kind of money into the promoting hd-dvd, they'll stand to lose a lot more than Sony.

The amount of money spent between the two is grossly disproportionate.

1. Sony spent a few billion to subsidize the Blu-Ray player in the PS3, by some estimates that alone cost them $2-3BN.

2. Sony purchased a movie company to keep it from HD DVD hands, cost was $2.9BN

3. Sony then bought Warner Bro's exclusivity for another $500+ Million.

4. Toshiba spent a reported $250M for Paramount and then a few hundred million for player subsidies and wind-down.

Sony might be able to recoup some of the almost $7BN cost that Blu-Ray incurred, but it will take years to do so. Meanwhile, the velocity of technology change is quickening, which may make Blu-Ray obsolete in less than 5 years. That means Sony needs to have $1.4Bn in pure profit from Blu-Ray per year over the next 5 years to just *break even*, not even to gain actual profit.

Who got the shaft on this deal? Definitely not Toshiba. They gambled, lost a few hundred million, moved onto the next business. BFD, companies do that all of the time. It's not often that they sink ~$7BN into a line that has marginal ability to turn a profit.

Add to that the new reports of a Sony-Toshiba deal for toshiba to supply chips for the PS3 and other items and it seems maybe sony even tried to pay HDDVD to go exclusive. :D

I saw an article this morning saying HD DVD was "kicked while it was down" because Universal and Amazon are shifting their sole focus. While the above link is a valid story, I'm at a loss on how people think any defections are "news" at this point, at least in terms of some kind of real loss. It's common sense that any party who were invested in HDM and had a stake in HD DVD would most likely migrate their sole focus to BD now. I guess I shouldn't be suprised, after seeing all the rhetoric-based stories floating around over the last several months.

Yay!

So when do I finally get Transformers and the "Borne" movies in Blu-Ray?

pretty soon I'd imagine (for Transformers). I believe they had already been printed on BD before the HD DVD exclusive bid hit. Assuming they didn't immolate their stock, I'm guessing 1 -2 months?

So I broke down and ordered a Toshiba HD-A30 on Amazon yesterday for $129.99 shipped. I had a $50 gift card to use and the rebate for 5 free HD DVDs requires purchase of a player on or before 2-28. I expect the price to drop further but at least I've got the 30 day Amazon price guarantee so hopefully I will end up getting it for less. Now I'm eagerly waiting on some cheap titles.

rofl, is this the new argument that hd-dvd fanboys are going with now? that sony lost too much money in the war to be declared the victor?

yup, it is

Counting the freebies it's cheaper than most standard DVD players. Do people who buy those get mocked for buying an obsolete betamax? I'd find all this hysteria sad if it weren't getting me such great deals on movies.

What's really funny is that I'll probably be able to get a fully functional bluray in several months for less than half what people are paying for PS3s. So even adding in the $120 for my A2 I still come out way ahead.

Suckas! :p
