After five years of futile efforts to find or confirm sightings of any Caribbean monk seals ? even just one ? the U.S. government on Friday announced that the species is officially extinct and the only seal to vanish due to human causes.

"Humans left the Caribbean monk seal population unsustainable after overhunting them," Kyle Baker, a biologist for the National Marine Fisheries Service, said in a statement. "Unfortunately, this led to their demise and labels the species as the only seal to go extinct from human causes."

sad to read that.

here in hawaii, we have our own version of the monk seal that is on the endangered list. we take protecting this species pretty seriously, as they have been trying to make a comeback to the major southern hawaiian islands from the northwestern hawaiian islands.

most times when they beach themselves in populated areas, the area around them is quickly roped off and monitored to ensure that they are not harassed in any way.

There are probably hundreds of species of something each year that go extinct that we don't even know about, and probably thousands more that we haven't even discovered yet. Sad to see this monk seal go, but it's not going to change the course of the Earth or impact your daily life in any way.

At the end of all this, we're going to have just four animal species left:

1) Humans
2) Sheep
3) Chickens
4) Cows

If the human race survives so long, that is.

Really. Do you think we are going to let BACON and HAM go extinct?!?!?

Actually, all domesticated animals might be around for as long as we can feed them, if diseases don't wipe them out first. And don't forget our various rodent pals. What good are giant spaceships to the stars if we can't have them full of diseased rats running around?

And the last carribean monk seal was also truely delicious with BBQ sauce dripping off its charred flesh. I wonder what lucky tribal islander got to eat that last extinct meal? :brokenheart:

...and pigeons. Damned if we'll ever be rid of those bastards.

The last one seen was back in the 50s so this apparently isnt really anything new, its just they've decided to make it official. These have apparently been gone longer than I've been alive.

The problem is there's a big portion of the population that will just sort of shrug their sholders and say "oh well". Sad that we are quickly destroying creatures that share our planet.....

The planet managed to wipe out far more species than we ever will.

Why can't we make certain species of insects go extinct instead? I for one will not miss the mosquitoes. There is probably a reason why I would actually miss them but I don't know what that is and those fuckers make me itchy!

Anyone seen a dinosaur walking around recently?

I suppose it's only a matter of time until someone in P&N accuses George W. Bush of wielding the club that killed the last baby Monk Seal... and the dinosaurs.

The removal of mosquitoes from the food chain would quickly bring about the end of many species, so we kinda have to put up with those vampires (albeit unpleasant)!

True, but that's over a span of thousands or even millions of years, or as the result of a cataclysmic event. Currently, it's the result of stupidity and a lack of caring about the environment.

Which species? I kind of assumed that might be the case, but I never knew what purpose they really serve in the ecosystem. Are they mostly good for food for other species or something?

Doubtful but proof?

Edit: Wait, I think your point was Ice Age and if so I would agree there but it doesn't change the fact that we as humans have and still are severely impacting species.

How the fuck do we manage to lose cool animals, like seals and birds, but can't get rid of fucking roaches, cow ants, spiders and mosquitoes.
