It's official: Antarctic glacial basin is a goner

Sea levels likely to rise by several meters by the end of the century.

Today, researchers at UC Irvine and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory have announced results indicating that glaciers across a large area of West Antarctica have been destabilized and that there is little that will stop their continuing retreat. These glaciers are all that stand between the ocean and a massive basin of ice that sits below sea level. Should the sea invade this basin, we'd be committed to several meters of sea level rise.

Even in the short term, the new findings should increase our estimates for sea level rise by the end of the century, the scientists suggest. But the ongoing process of retreat and destabilization will mean that the area will contribute to rising oceans for centuries.

But the good news is that we won't have to hear fucked up news stories emanating from Florida anymore.

No shits given.

Why stress about things you have no control over? That kind of attitude will just get you an early heart attack.

Plus, the bright side is that Jersey shore and long island are getting wiped out

I thought global warming was made up?

global climate change caused by man is the fairy tale.

though perhaps cave men had gasoline powered cars and coal power plants to turn the Ice Age around? :hmm:

I swear I read this same article during the 80s. If California really believed this, they would be moving out in droves.

Who's stressing? I think this is a great thing! Right now several parts of the world are worried about drought and water shortages... this solves their problems. :awe:

Is it your position that just because man didn't cause some climate change, then it follows that man doesn't/can't cause any climate change?

It's unlikely, imho.

The change in weather is nothing but trends. Trends that have come and gone 1,000's of times in the past. You can't really judge weather on a daily basis, and hardly on a yearly basis. You have to look at it in decades/centuries and we've barely been keeping scientific track of the weather for a century.

Can man cause a small amount of global warming? Of course. Does it matter? Probably not.

World is getting warmer and Antarctica drops a huge ice cube into the ocean to cool it back down?

Politically, if this prediction is verified, I wonder what will be done? Will giant walls be built around our shore - leaving Florida and many other areas similar to Holland, but on a much bigger scale? Will people be told "tough shit." Will insurance companies hit a point where they decide, "sorry, you're on your own. We're not insuring your ocean-front property. It's going to be under water in another generation or so."

This

Meanwhile, hype up "water front" property to the max and extract as much money as possible

So sure of this are you? The scientific community and the governments of most of the rest of the world have little doubt that man is contributing to global warming... certainly we are directly responsible for the increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It is only here in the United Stupid of America, where it has become a political issue, that people question what is generally regarded as fact throughout the rest of the world.

I have a solution, let's tax Americans billions and billions of dollars, sending most of that money to a few well-tied politicians and to third-world developing countries. That will surely solve the problem.

No, I have a better idea, let's do absolutely nothing. That way we can be assured of the worst possible outcome.

This is already the case.

" In the 1960s flood insurance became completely unprofitable and private companies no longer offered flood insurance policies. This meant that the costs of floods were borne by property owners, many of which could not afford such high disaster costs. The government provided public disaster aid to affected property owners. In 1968, the National Flood Insurance Act established the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which allows property owners to purchase insurance from the U.S. government that covers certain losses from flooding."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Flood_Insurance_Program

In fact if you try to get flood insurance through Geico you are actually getting it from the govenrment.

"Homes and businesses located in communities that participate in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) are eligible for flood insurance at a modest cost through the federal government. Under this program, insurance companies issue flood insurance and the federal government administers the program."

https://www.geico.com/information/aboutinsurance/flood/

Only the government can run an unprofitable program for the long term. Any other company would go out of business.
