Its now painfully obvious why my opty 165 gets so hot.

I have a 90mm fan and it never goes above 1800-2000RPM. This sucks for a 90mm, as my old socket 754 fan went all the way up to 5000RPM and kept my chip cool, didnt do that very often but it could if needed. The stock one on the 4 heatpipe heatsink sucked, so i removed that and put a different one on, same results. I also have a 120mm fan with an SI-120, it runs at around 1000 RPM, dosent cool the chip any better.

I need a better fan! I have an antec P-180 and im not a silent freak so basically recommend me one, or if you have one of these (Fan at bottom Delta 120mm Focussed Flow Fan) hows it perform?

I looked at a fan roundup in the heatsink reviews sticky, but they dont go up to 4000 RPM like the beast above does.

EDIT: Oh dear... hehe I really really hope i can control the speed of it somehow and itll only go to 4000 RPM when its actually needed......
 
RPM isn't everything. My fan on my zalman CNPS9500 is normally at about 1650RPM. It'll only kick into high gear (around 2600RPM IIRC) if the temp gets to 47*C and it has only done that a couple times when I was in an abnormally warm room.

The 165 is dual core right? That probably puts out more heat than my 3700+ @2.86GHz, but it shouldn't be too much for a SI-120 or the stock heatpipe cooler. What you might have is bad airflow inside the case, what fan setup do you have in there?
 
😱 oh noes not the noisy delta fan is it??!!!! 😀 Strange why your stock fan can't go up to 5000rpm also, as I've seen it mentioned that it does that in reviews - maybe you've got software limiting it already to that speed?
 
I have an Antec P180 with a 120mm intake and 120mm outtake and a 120mm uptake? these are all set to medium.

The stock fan has its own thermal thing, apparently if i was to short it then it would run at 5000rpm, but i cant because its too far into the fan mechanism and the two wires arent long enough to be twisted together.

I dont know about the max RPM of the other fan i had in there (this one came with a cheapish but well performing P4 heatsink) but i could control it with speedfan. I could turn it off completely or speed it back up, however speedfan couldnt tell me its RPM, it wasent over 3000 though as the 90mm in my old socket 754 would be audible at over 3000RPM and i couldnt hear this P4 fan at all, it didnt look 3000+ RPM either.

Also ambient temps are normal, slightly cold. Dont know exactly im just going by how i feel right now 🙂 For the record i gave up on the 165 and put my old 170 back in, which is now doing 2.6ghz for some reason... it couldnt do that a few months back!! Lazy piece o trash. Anyways its 50*C under load with the SI-120 and slow 120mm fan, 56*C max when dual priming, stays stable for 6 hours.
 
Could it have been the PSU?? I remember my old antec 430 truepower having some fan control thing in it, a little three pin blue and black cable that went to the mobo had somthing to do with it. Was that just for the mobo to control the PSU fan? or the other way around?

That would be so the motherboard can control/monitor the PSU fan (some are controlled by the motherboard, some just seem to let you monitor the speeds as it's controlled by a thermal resistor), in a P180 it's pretty irrelevant.

Well i stuck a 120mm 4 pin fan on there, these have no fan control since they run off the PSU and not the mobo. It runs at 2000 RPM, temp never ever goes above 52*C, temp under dual prime right now is 48*C, this is down from the 56-60*C temps i was getting with the lower RPM fan that dosent seem to be able to go above 1100 RPM.

The lower RPM fan actually should go to 1500 i think as in my P180 case i installed it down in the PSU compartment and its running off the "sysfan" connector on the mobo instead of the "cpufan" one. Its at 1400ish RPM now. Speedfan cant turn it down or anything though. So i blame this fan, i ordered the 4000 RPM delta super fan thing, so itll ramp up to 3000+ RPM if needed, which will probably be never based on my results with the current 2000 RPM fan, also speedfan should be able to control it anyways.
 
Well guys, i can safely say that the 4000 RPM delta fan has been the best buy ive ever bought.

In case you havent been following this thread, my temps were in the high 50's, breaking 60 somtimes because i had a 1500 RPM 120mm fan and it never ran anything faster than 1200 RPM. Now it never breaks 43*C when dual priming, with a high ambient temp (its summer and im sunburnt etc)

Anyways the fan is silent at 1500 RPM, audible at 2000 RPM, it dosent really start to bother you until it hits 2500-3000 RPM, and itll only do that when im running dual prime or somthing, general usage/gaming never pushes it that high. Who sits around and watches their rig while it primes anyways? This fan is awsome 🙂 Long live the 4000 RPM delta!

Btw its not that wussy 3-fin thing, its the big one with many many fins and a grill to stop you sticking your finger in it.
