It's not just Verizon. It's essentially the internet. WP and Arstechnica Report.

So you're saying so long as I run my own mail server and access everything through VPNs I'll be pretty secure?

FYI

The bigger concern is who leaked this secret information and court order. They should be arrested.

And as we've previously established, you should move to your North Korean utopia or shut up about it. And don't say you can't. An American defector to North Korea would be such big news I imagine Kim would pay your travel expenses and give you a premium spot in Pyongyang.

No, they should be given a medal and treated as a hero. This secret government stuff has gotten way out of control. As Americans we should demand a more transparent government and reject all out government spying on our citizens in the name of security.

Because only the federal government should have secret information and shouldn't need the due process of a judge-approved warrant to access ours without probable cause. We really have failed hard as a society.

It is illegal to ask them what they are doing with the information. Home Land Security is like the Gestapo and the white house is full of Nazi's.

Don't worry, I'm sure Eric Holder and the Ministry of Truth is already working on it. We can't have anyone committing doubleplusbad thoughtcrime under the Dear Leader's benevolent gaze.

Prediction:

Nothing is done, since the loudest voices will blame Bush for starting it or Obama for expanding it, while letting their own guy completely off the hook.

It's a bipartisan effort to do something about all those terrorists that hate us for our freedom.

So, blame isn't warranted to the man who signed this level of eavesdropping into law...

\y'know who else signed off on it...

It is. But if one person drives off a cliff, and the guy after him says "you know what, I'm going to drive off FASTER even after I promised to avoid the cliff in the first place!", who deserves more blame exactly?

Both administrations are responsible for this. The program started under Bush but Obama didn't have to continue it.

The WP article said the companies have latitude to resist this. Try boycotting them. They are denying their participation but that won't last with this information coming out. They definitely don't want their customers knowing.

While I can assign blame to both Bush and Obama, I'm hoping I might have the chance to give Obama for reining this in going forward whereas it's too late for Bush. Partisans can argue over who to blame in the past and present, I care about what happens in the today+1 future.

Where else is there to go? Microsoft mail, gmail, yahoo mail are all collaborating, apparently. Suppose you could go to a small private outfit, but most people are too lazy to make the switch.

One of the many terrible things Bush did to this country. Now shut it down.

Please...

Why is Obama and the Democrat Senate not doing anything?

Why hasn't the Democrat majority Senate since 2006 repealed the Patriot Acts?

What hasn't the Democrat majority Senate since 2006 passed specific laws limiting the power of the Executive to spy on us?

They can end this any time.

So can the members of the GOP.... I've searched high and low for any mention of ending the "patriot act" from them.... oddly, I've seen nothing yet...

\oh, yeah - they're busy repealing Obama-care for the 30th time...

That's your excuse? Really?

All we heard under Bush from Democrats was how terrible all this stuff was.

Democrats have been in power in the Senate since 2006. They've been in the White House since 2008. It's half way to 2014 right now.

When exactly are they going to DO something?

The Republicans NOT acting isn't an excuse for the Democrats to do the same thing.
